Yes...and what a grounded pleasant young man he seems to be. So proud to have him in our team.

Southgate surely has to pick him next month

Yep.

I've thought for a while that one of the signs of us being an established PL team would be our ability to bring young players through into the first team.

Roy is the first manager who has been able to do that, and deserves credit for the coaching and man management required to blood a young player in such a competitive environment. I say that without wanting to take anything away from Aaron - or his parents, who raised him right.

It also highlights a problem with the assumption that young players must go on loan to prove themselves. It's no coincidence that our successful academy graduates - Moses, Clyne, Zaha, AWB - had not been out on loan.

With Lumeka for example, what is he expected to learn by playing at an awful mess of a club like Leyton Orient? Have you seen their pitch? What would League Two football and training teach him about life in the Premier League? What valuable life lesson can be garnered from getting kicked every week, when the Premier League is so different?

If AWB had gone on loan to League Two, there's every chance he would have struggled - as a quiet lad, far from home, away from his friends and family, in a different setup, an unfamiliar manager and a completely different style of training and playing.

AWB's success also shows that we should take more risks in giving young players a chance. You simply never know how they will do, and the rewards are huge. Struggling at a League Two club is no indication that the player would not thrive at his 'home' club.

Obviously some players are not destined for the first team and so a loan will help them to find their level. And Harry Kane is a good example of a player who developed through loans - or despite them. You can't refute the value of loans.

But the assumption that our academy players must go on loan before they reach the first team is flawed IMO. Sometimes they are better off training at a PL level, with better quality players and a proper structure around them on a day-to-day basis. I'm glad Roy sees that.

(And I'm sure Woosie will pipe up to disagree, as is his wont.)

I think it's difficult to say whether AWB would have done well or not on loan in League Two tbh. Some players thrive in that situation, some players don't.

Loans are generally an effective way of giving young players much needed experience that they otherwise may not have.

Seldom do players who struggle at U23 level go on to play senior football anywhere above non-league.

I don't think there is much evidence to suggest that if a player struggles in League Two he will go on to do well at a parent club in a higher division.

I don't disagree with your overall conclusion that the claim players must go on loan before playing in the first team is flawed though.

Lumeka is his own worst enemy

'it would be boring if they won every time right?'

To be, or not to be, that is the question:

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end

Any youth left backs up and coming similar to Wan Bissaka? We need cover in that area.

Only heard of the lad very recently but I believe we have quite a promising young Left Back called Mitchell?
