John Barnes - Years ahead of his time

I have realised in recent weeks that John Barnes was in fact years ahead of his time. He was universallly mocked for wearing gloves, tights and coloured boots - all of which are prevalent in todays game.

There is also the fact that he was a very, very good player for his club, but whenever he pulled on an England shirt he became shit - again, this is prevalent in todays game.

This is a worry if you thought that todays commentators / pundits were bad!

Let's just stress that:
1. anyone who wears gloves while playing is a keeper or a nancy.
2. tights are for ballet dancers and Shakespearean actors (and nancies.)
3. coloured boots are inexcusable.

He may have been years ahead of his time but he was the prophet of nancy crap.

I often wonder what the qualifications for a football 'pundit' are. With John Barnes I would say there are none, unless he qualifies because.........no, that would be too cynical.

Because he's an ex-footballer who can string two sentences together? It doesn't leave much competition really.

When he came on as sub against Argentina in 86 he was amazing. I still can't believe Lineker didn't get his head to that last cross. Most other times shit, but it may be because managers didn't play him the right way. He was awaesome for Liverpool who would definately have won the european cup with that side they had then in 1987.

Part of a long list of highly talented flair players who didn't really convince for the national team, see also Rodney Marsh ,Glenn Hoddle, Matt Le Tissier.

Have you not seen "Sir" Les Ferdinand on Telly?

He makes Barnes look like Richard Dimbleby
