I used to live and breathe football, I have to be honest Football without the fans has sucked the life out of me.

It’s a term that gets banded about a lot, but football without the fans really is nothing. I actually think I prefer boxing for the excitement on a sporting level. Something I don’t think I’d have ever said 18 months ago.

In my not so great memory they were landscape and split vertically, so you'd get wee stickers of e.g. Willie Miller and Gordon Strachan from Aberdeen. I think the club badges were the same size as real football clubs' though.

Now, there's a handful of players you are familiar with, at best, in any given Prem team, at least for me. I've also lost interest in the European competitions, due to the hyperbole and same old teams playing from England. But part of my ignorance is due to disinterest in football in general. The money and middle-class assimilation of the game killed a lot of my passion. I love Palace now and that's about it. I used to have a soft spot for Everton and Spurs but couldn't give a shite about them anymore. The game has lost it's allure.
Dann, Ward, McCarthur, Benteke, Zaha, Kelly, Townsend, Luka, PVA, Clyne even came back.

LOL you could even add the sicknotes to the list - even Mutch.

I've generally lost a lot of interest in football the last couple of years but could still name the starting 11s of most prem teams I think. The one I have lost touch with is European football. Used to be all over it but would struggle to name more than 3 or 4 Madrid, barca or Bayern players for example

Although we have actually had some good wins, this season, the only game I enjoyed on the TV, involving us, was the Spurs home game. There might have only been 2000 there, but no fake atmosphere and you actually heard the ref getting stick, for the usual atrocious decisions. The match felt real.

I've hardly watched any other games live, apart from us, this season.

I remember seeing Mason engineer the sending off of a Villa player and then punch the air in celebration. Teammates almost had to restrain him. unfortunate his carreer ended early, Had he been on the staff since. Its quite a leap to replace Mourinho

Is it just memory problems as you get older or that you have so much else on your mind to deal with?

I have very little knowledge of football outside of Palace and what I see on MOTD. I used to have a very good knowledge of teams and grounds etc up to my early 20s.
First I fell out of love with watching England, mainly the total lack of excitement after Euro '96 and some ludicrously bad performances and refereeing decisions.
Then I stopped going to Palace regularly after AJ was sold (I'd been going for 30 years odd) and I thought the clubs started taking the piss with ticket prices. I never thought that day would come. My last ever game was the Cup Final. I don't think I'll be going again TBH.
Now I sometimes don't even bother watching MOTD if Palace don't feature. Football has been ruined in so many ways, mostly by the money & the overpaid tarts who play it. I prefer watching my son play and find it much more exciting than Royball.

I'd say watching your son play (or kids football in general) is real football mate.

We haven't, according to Gonzo (the result doesn't count for some bizarre Hodgson-hating reason).

I think there is a correlation to the following: being a young lad who looks up to football players and adores, whilst not spend time on message boards, with, being a middle aged man who no longer look up to football players and is less passionate about football, who do post on message boards.

Yes the game has changed, but alot of it is to do with getting older.

Even as an adult I play too many video games that gives me a false knowledge of too many players. I went to Wimbledon v Accrington with respective fans of each club and knew more about their squads than they did...yet Id never seen any of them play and my mates watched them every week.

I'm not sure I am any more out of touch with football than I was 40 years ago. True, I can't name the starting X1 of any side nowadays but I put that as much down to player rotation as my lack of knowledge. I would say that football gets over-analysed, players get over-hyped and all in all you are made to feel that you don't know as much as you should in order that "pundits" can justify their existence.

I really don't need a 1 hour highlights programme to spend 30 minutes telling me what my opinion should be about the footage they have piecemealed together, particularly if it includes a game that I spent 95 minutes watching live.
