Why do we never do a pre-season in Northern France?

Easy to get to for teams and fans an lots of reasonable teams in the area.

Nantes, Rennes, Brest, Angers currently in Ligue 1, Caen, Le Mans, Lorient, Le Havre all in Ligue 2.

Just seems a reasonable area to go for a summer camp, play a few reasonable teams at little cost.

We played Metz a couple of seasons ago. Ticks both your North and France boxes.

The 1 off game yes, i am thinking more like what we did in Scandinavia last season with a few games and a training camp. We have 2 games in Switzerland this year.

With the teams in Brittany and Normandy you could do a couple of 1st team and a couple of XI fixtures.

Seems to be based on Roy’s history/connections, such as Denmark/Sweden last season, and Switzerland this season all of which are fine. Hopefully his Italian connections for next season would be great for pre season Maybe France if he’s still with us the year after?

Far too convenient and affordable for Palace fans to be able to attend, so no chance.

I mean it’s not like there’s any trouble when England or English teams play in France.

I have long thought the same about Palace playing in Scotland. Did try my best to influence George Burley on that front, but he barely made it past Christmas, so he never got to choose really!!!

Scotland used to be a popular destination for lower league English teams, however, my understanding is, fell out of favour for pre-season tours for a variety of reasons:

- Too many teams treating it as England v Scotland grudge matches, leading to injuries.
- Ditto fans, crowd trouble recorded at games (perhaps unsurpisingly) involving Millwall & Birmingham.
- State of the pitches (less of an issue given the number of 3G surfaces now)
- Low standard of opposition

The main one these days, however, is that The Scottish League Cup now starts in 2nd week of July meaning teams outside the Prem are occupied at both weekends and midweek, until the League season starts.

Because that is what training and pre season is all about.

You are assuming that the process of selecting pre-season venues and opposition is proactive, rather than reactive.

I believe that it all depends on the offers we get, we go with the best one, whereever they may be. And as we are currently a Premier team, we do get a fair few offers. Hence why we've ended up in places like the US, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong in recent years.

Despite a certain someone's plaintive caterwauling on several threads, our club don't factor in whether fans can attend and I don't think Palace are alone in that policy. Outside of Man Utd and Liverpool, "brand building" is no longer a factor. It's been tried time and again and hasn't really worked.

It's all about bang for the buck, but you can be sure that if the best offer comes from Northern France then we'll be off there. That said, I doubt that any pre-season offer would be enough to cover both Senior and U-23 squads.

Good couple of posts by Neil. Steve Browett made it pretty clear on here several years ago (when he used to operate the Questions to CPFC2010 section) that the prime consideration of where we went was if a club would cover our travelling costs and expenses.

We played Exeter at Tiverton in Summer 2010, just after CPFC2010 took over and I believe it cost the club something like 30 grand for all the accommodation, travel and training stuff, which I think was a bit of a shock to the new owners then.

When Lazio visited us four or five years ago, that also cost the club a lot, because what we had to pay to get them over wasn't recovered in ticket sales (Cue everyone on here saying they'd have gone if it had been in Rome!). Crowd was what? 7k?

It must be a hassle arranging a game for the week before the season kicks off, because all the other English divisions have started their league programme, leaving Prem clubs to find foreign opposition

Regarding the Scottish issue, I think the Speroni testimonial against Dundee was the true definition of 'friendly', and it would be a real shame if the few hundred Palace fans who would travel north of the border couldn't be relied upon to act as positive ambassadors for the club. Totally take the point about troublemakers of other clubs having spoilt that opportunity though.

I only tend to go to a couple of pre-season games a year these days though - usually away ones where I fancy going somewhere new or where I haven't been for several years.
