2012 MLS players (Suggestion Thread)

As an FYI, the MLS player salaries usually come out the first week of May.

Seeing how some MLS players have been snapped up already (Bolton : Time Ream) and our season is winding down to a close, it would be nice to create a list of suggested talent for CPFC to take a peak at if so inclined.

Why MLS you ask?
- They play the same level as the Championship give or take
- They're players are groslly underpaid

Probably out of our pay grade but was the breakout MLS player last year. Is only 22 and has cemented his place on the left wing of the US Mens National Team.

A solid center forward. Nothing flashy but he's tall, strong and fairly pacy. Was given a trial by Bolton along with Tim Ream but they only opted to go for Ream.

Loved him in his brief stay with the Red Bulls and was disappointed when they traded him to Colorodo where he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. He's recovered from the surgery and should be fairly cheap. Very tall (6'4") and very fast for his size (Red Bulls played him on the right wing of a 433 where Henry played the left).

Other suggestions welcome ...

Steve Zakuani
Easily was the best player on his team (I'd argue in the MLS) before a horrific injury last year. Left wing, extremely pacy, great dribbler and finisher. I don't believe he is left-footed naturally, so that is a bit of a downside, and it remains to be seen how he comes back after the injury, if he has lost any pace. His brother Gabriel plays for Posh, and he started at Arsenal's academy, so I would assume he would jump at the chance to play in England.

The only real issue with any MLS player is the difficulty we might have in securing work permits for them. They either have to have exception talent, a French grandmother or international caps.

I'd also be cautious about the level of quality in the MLS - its improving but I'd say that quite a few sides would struggle were they to play in the Championship.

For example, Luke Rodgers struggled in the lower reaches of the Football League yet was almost nominated for the MVP award last season.

There are definitely players who stand out though.

Out of interest, why are MLS players underpaid? How come some clubs can afford, Beckham, Henry, Keane etc?

As you know we desperately need someone like this Brek Shea chap but what sort of wages would he be on at the moment?

The way MLS works is that clubs are allowed up to 3 marque players that they can spend whatever they want on (Henry, Donovan, Keane, etc) the rest of the squad has a salary cap of $300,000 USD with the vast majority of players earning less than $100,000 USD.

Last year I suggested Tim Ream (who got bought by Bolton). Tim earned $55,000 in 2011.

Brek Shea earned $44,000 in 2011.

Go find a full international winger in a top 20 country in the championship on less than 1k per week.

Did Dorman play MLS?

I don't think you can call it Championship level btw.

Brek Shea trained with Arsenal in January and sounds like he impressed Wenger. Doesn't seem like the Arsenal type of player, though. More like a Fulham or Wigan.

Former Palace players Gregg berhalter and Jovan Kirovski were only earning $90K and 86K respectively as opposed to Beckhams 6.5 million!!!

I condone the MLS for letting it's salaries known to the genreal public and I wish that English leagues would follow suit.

I still think the MLS has a long way to go before it can compete with the European leagues in quality but doubtless there are good players out there waiting to be discovered

$44k?? Blimey

Definitely worth a trial at least, especially for a position we are in desperate need of. I know it seems all football managerish but I'd love to see us take more gambles on players like this. I know they maybe duds but for every Zohar there is a Zhiyi out there.

Strange salary cap system though, must create animosity amongst the lower paid players.
