That loss was indeed our last loss of the season. It was 1-0 to us when we had to leave because our driver "wanted to miss the traffic". I thought my dad was winding me up when he said we lost 2-1. No teletext back then, so I had to wait for the BBC to confirm it at the end of the news.

It was St David's Day and the taffy's brought a fair few fans. For some strange reason I thought that Cardiff went ahead in the game. Anyone remember? Sure it was Toshack.

I we were well in front when they scored. Was under the roof of the Arthur. I remember it was a pretty cold day ,and yes it was a charged atmosphere . Beating the Taffs on St Davids day was a bonus ,had a sore throat at the end of the game, which got me out of a do I did not want to go to that night.

I can see I'm going to have to dig out my scrap book again... just by luck this was the only year I kept one with a newspaper cutting of every game (I think).

It was Good Friday and I remember how lucky we were catching the 130 from the New Addington terminus at Homestead Way. Lucky because it was an early kick off and so many people wanted to go the bus was full up after a few stops.

I remember that more clearly than the match which was a tedious bore draw.

A belated arrival at this thread - must find the copy of Palace Echo in which there's an account of the season I wrote.

I was probably the only Palace supporter at my school which was predominately Charlton and Millwall. As such I went to several Charlton games during that season when Palace were either away or not playing.

They did in fact finish 6 points behind us in third but had some important wins near the end of the season over Cardiff and Middlesbrough. The highlight game for me was watching them beat the champions Derby at home 2-0. Other memories were watching wins at Oxford with both Palace and Charlton. Both the league games with Charlton finished in draws as did the third round cup game at the Valley, although they won the replay 2-0 denying us a trip to Arsenal.

Your story is very similar to mine. I went to a lot of Charlton games back then as my mates Dad took us. I even went to the Arsenal game you talk of!

Was the Middlesbrough game a record crowd at the time?

It was a league game record for us with a crowd of 43,381. At the time our record crowd was 45,384 for the 6th round cup game against Leeds in March 1965.

We were soon to break that the following season with a crowd of 48,610 in our first home game against Man United.

The Palace vs Boro attendance was a league record at the time breaking the previous record of 38,006 set in Sept 1967 when QPR were the visitors. As we all know the record didn't last for long

Thanks guys... something in the back of my head was telling me it wasn't a record.

Like most have said on here, it was a let down of a game in the sun and a morning kick off. Had to stand way up the back of the Holmesdale and towards the gates at the Park Road side due to the crowd.

Got Cliff Jackson's autograph that day and was made up , my first Palace hero. Perfect day

Slightly off subject, by a few months,I was very surprised to hear that we beat the mighty Leeds Utd in the League Cup that season. Leeds won the League Championship THAT year! If you look at the Their side it was pretty much full strength. I don't recall it mentioned in famous Palace victory lists etc (though maybe I missed it) . Little us had never been in the top tier of course so I'd rate this a pretty bl*ody famous victory. Anyway, since I've got you here, couldn't resist, ,anyof you guys go? Any memories / thoughts to share?

Colin Taylor's thunderbolt of a free kick, a great atmosphere and the fact that the win made us begin to believe we could actually reach the First Division at last.

And Brighton's record home attendance is still only 36k, in 1958, pathetic!
