With all the money splashing around between clubs during the close season and Bale looking likely to sell for 85 million and possibly creating a mini boom of internal Premier transfers, Zaha would be hot property now.

When have Palace ever been able to hang on to their top players? And Wilf is our best ever. We got a good deal.

Get used to it guys because if Johnny has a good season then even if we stay up, he'll be gone next summer.

Does this include getting us promoted?

I think its fair to say one of holloways best qualities is his man management, had we rejecte man utd then wilf would have been deflated, would he have played as well in the play offs and got us promoted? he was absolutely on another level in the play offs and I think its because he felt he owed us for getting him a dream move. He said he would get us promoted and he did, we got double our previous record fee for him in the process and I for one will forever hold him as a palace legend because of that and I will be proud seeing him tear it up in the champions league and internationally as many others previous to him have failed to do when they have left the club.

There's an element of that and tied to that is the reality of modern football - hanging on to a player with an interested suitor, is beyond the ability of most smaller teams. People on here seem to have a lovely quaint view of contracts.

In your working life, if another company wanted to treble your money for doing the same job and your current employer said no you can't go, you have signed a contract so you need to stay a few months would you work as hard for those next few months? No.

Exactly, the fact it all ended so amicably with us getting a great fee and zaha still happy is testament to cpfc2010 and wilf himself.. There are so many examples in modern day football of the smaller clubs losing out but I honestly believe in this deal everyone was a winner

Why did Kirby bump a thread about the all stars match with details about a new match?

Doesn't this annoy people?

It would be handy if we could tag the threads 'Zaha' knowing we could bring them all up at once. Otherwise people will feel they need to stay within the old threads.

Yep.

Anyone that thinks we could have driven the price up much further for a raw talent like Wilf is just mental. He went for more ( up front) than Walcott, Bale or Oxlade-Chamberlain. We got a good deal and so did Utd.

We just have to deal with that reality and just wait for the next mercurial talent. Thankfully we have a rich supply from our academy (perhaps not quite as great as Wilf but you get my point).

United were offering him a contract of 35k a week for 5 years. We would have had to match that. Bit difficult for a championship club.

I agree, the timing and the price was as good as we could have hoped for, I hope you have not read my post the wrong way...

He's just class. I think having better players around him is going to play a massive part in his development. He's got a healthy arrogance which makes him already look at home in a team that are reigning champions. Manchester City should bid 52.73 million for him before the window shuts. Would be money well spent.

You can't know that.
In any case how much is staying up this season worth ?
How much is watching a great player in a Palace shirt worth ?
Why do you watch football again ?

Anyone who says hindsight is a wonderful thing should look back threads from the time and see how many people, including me, said he should stay back then.
That 10 million doesn't seem like so much now does it.
Really - the time was right for Zaha to go and it is what he wanted. When the biggest club in the world comes for you and offers you a 20 yr old £35,000 per week then it is nigh impossible to say no however wedded you are to your club.

It's all well and good expecting or wanting more but for a winger it was a superb bit of business. We have £10m and his happiness nd contribution were instrumental in our play off success and so the gain of £60-£120m.

On top of this we have an almost guaranteed £5m over the next 3 years from Man U + a sell on fee which I presume would be around 10%.

Considering that many feel he will become a £50m+ player over the next 4-5 yrs, over all £20m for a player that will take 4-5 yrs of solid work by Man Utd to develop is amazing business.

Suddenly everyone's an agent.
Funny I thought that the teams chances of success and entertaining fans was more important.
We have always sold our best players and we have always failed to achieve our goal of consistant top flight football. I don't that is a coinsidence.
When we are back in the Championship next season will you be happily rubbing your hands over the money the club has made or will you be gutted that we failed once again to be good enough on the pitch ?
