Of the younger players being released, I do not think there are any major surprises.

Alistair Gordon is a right back who joined us aged 16 or 17 from Chelsea. Had played for England at younger age groups and then had an injury after which he could not get back into Chelsea youth side. So we took him on and I think as there was other interest, we probably had to promise him an initial pro deal to land him. Decent but not IMHO going to make a player in top 2 divisions. And his goose was cooked by fact that we had hot RB prospect Mandela Egbo coming up behind him.

Ross Fitzsimmons has done OK on loan at non league clubs and could make a career at that level and eventually make his way back up. Long road for him. He is decent at shot stopping and claiming crosses but you have to be outstanding at shot stopping these days to make it at the top level. And Dave Gregory is clearly the better prospect as he is an outstanding shot stopper.

Bit surprised we did not give Tom King more time. We paid money to Pompey for him when he was England U17 keeper at time as we had just lost Freddie Woodman (now England U17 keeper) to Newcastle. Big strong guy who suffered last season with loss of bit of agility due to sheer size. Always great under crosses as so strong. Trimmed down a bit last season and became more agile as a result. So still a chance of making it to the top eventually but I guess he has been told Gregory will be U21 keeper next season (King will be too old to play U18s) so he needs to move elsewhere to get game time and develop as Palace have clearly bet on Gregory being the better prospect.

Quade Taylor did well on loan in Conference for Welling and he will forge a career at that level or maybe Conf South I suspect.

Derek Tieku is a small CF who joined the Academy aged 17 after being released by, I think, Fulham. I woould guess that was similar deal to Gordon in that there was other interest when Fulham released him and we had to promise him an initial pro deal to land him. He is neat and tidy and very good at holding ball up and linking play and can score goals but he is not the type of player who is likely to make it at Palace. He is another who will need to drop down a few levels to make it I think.

No major surprises, but would have been happy for Parr and Gabbidon to sign on for an extra year as cover. Although, they may have expressed a desire to pursue first team football elsewhere.

Me too but it's an understandable decision. Little surprised that Gabbidon wasn't given a one-year extension.

Only player I'm really sad to see go is Gabbidon - he's been superb since the playoffs & really hasn't let us down. Seemed to be integral to our team spirit & is a top pro. All the best to him.

As for the others - Prem was a step too far. Parr was always a weird one. He could go from the sublime to the ridiculous. He was a fantastic athlete & would run through walls. However, as a footballer - he's not all that. He could never seem to work out which foot he was better with. He loved a shank straight into touch & that own goal vs Bristol City last year showed his decision making was not the best. He was a very honest player though & always gave nothing less than 100% - something I could never fault him for. Same as Moxey really. Was a breath of fresh air when we signed him & improved our team significantly. However, as we got better - he just stayed at his level. Where as Parr was better defensively, Moxey was a better footballer in terms of having a very cultured left peg with a great delivery & shot on him. The two of them blended together would be a very good player! All the best to them.

The others - meh. I know loads seem to love Wilbraham but I've never got that. If we hadn't gone up last season, it'd have been largely due to him squandering a host of fantastic chances in the playoff final. Luckily for him, we had Zaha & Super Kev to see us over the line.

I Liked Moxey, always put in the shift.
Same for Parr, but I never felt he looked that comfortable
Gabbidon was crucial in our promotion I feel.

Good luck to all of them. As has been said, it feels a bit harsh/brutal but thats the league we are in now.
I hope we have a left back lined up though, and a centre back too now.

Respect to Gabbidon. Was a very good player for us who has played a big part in getting us where we are today. Always handled himself with class.

A shame about Parr especially, think he would have been a good option to have in the squad.

Very good summary of Parr and Moxey. Exactly how I felt, but couldnt be bothered to write it.....

Sad to see some of these players go - good luck to them all.

Gabbidon, who was horrendous to begin with, became a fine defender and he didn't do much to be dropped. It was just a case of Dann being an upgrade but Gabbidon was very good for us.

I've always had a soft spot for Moxey - love his determination and workrate. However, I can see why he has been let go. Same with Parr who I never rated much but respected his attitude and commitment.

Best of luck to Wilbs too - not the moist gifted of strikers to say the least but he could be relied upon to close out a game, and he played an important part after Murray got injured.

Interesting summer ahead. I think we need two LBs; one CB or maybe two; one CM; two wingers; and a striker (as well as Chamakh re-signing).

This issue is always interesting because it is sad to see promising youngsters and loyal players go but exciting to think who might step up in the youth ranks and who might replace the more experienced players.
These guys had come to the end of their contracts - I suspect there are a number of others that will also be released but have time left on their contracts. They will probably be gently told they have little or no chance of first team action, even on the bench and may be encouraged to look elsewhere. I think we can all probably name 3-4 such players.

I'm not sure we should assume that we didn't want to keep any of these players. It may be that someone like Parr, recognising he wasn't going to be first choice next season, told TP he was happy to let his contract run out so he could roll the dice elsewhere.

Gazza2, always enjoy your posts. Just curious...did you ever see anything in Lewis Grabban to make you think he'd one day be a 3 million player?

There's something heartwarming about the tales of young lads like Grabban and Stephen Hunt making it in the game after the setback of being released early in their careers. (Even if we don't get the payday, ultimately)
