The total focus of the climate change lobby on CO2 is simply ridiculous.

Methane levels are increasing exponentially compared to CO2.

The USA and China generate around 40% of the worlds emissions.

Sadly the answers mean spending without profit which will not happen due to short-termism in politics.

Governments need to spend money on extracting methane and CO2 and storing it, frozen areas would be best.

Stopping the growth in human population, and thus livestock levels (methane).

Flooding some of the areas of land below sea level.

Stopping deforestation. If this continues then the growth in human population will be solved as none of us will be able to breath.

Building desalination plants and giving the poor free fresh water to drink and for irrigation. (Yeah right!).

Bottom line the focus on profit will be the human races downfall.
Classic case in point, they had been tracking the inexplicable rise in a byproduct of CFC 11 a banned ozone depletion chemical, they tracked it down to an area in China that specialises in manufacturing insulation blocks and foam and voilà they were blatantly using it. Setting back any recovery for years simply for profit.

Now the bigger issue I guess is that the economy was driving it by everyone wanting cheap material and buying with their eyes closed.

It's a key reason why we have to be in it, ideally, and if not, close to it and influential on it.
You can certainly see Brexit and Trump as a kind of Anglo abdication of responsibility, of a kind of hegemony, and at worst, even, of relevance.

In the EU we’re told to be more like Germany. Germany’s CO2 is the same as the U.K. and France combined.

They like to burn lignite coal in their power stations because it is easier to mine it (and they have a lot of it to mine) even though it is pretty much the worst thing you could burn. In fact Jänschwalde, Boxberg, and Schwarze Pumpe, which are German power stations, are some of the largest point sources of CO2 in the world.

But we’re supposed to be more like Germany.

Good point, but on the other hand, if the EU decides to do nothing about climate change, and I am not aware of any meaningful EU decisions on the topic, then that would tie the UKs hands to a large extent, whereas, as an independent country we can choose our own approach

What actions did they take against VW in Germany?

Again profit over health and climate VW should have been heavily sanctioned worldwide.

These are the first three links if you type 'EU climate change' into google. Its not hard information to find rather than assuming something doesn't exist because you are unaware of it.

Earlier this year, to great applause, Germany announced it would close its 84 coal fired power stations by 2038.

We only have seven coal fired power stations left and they are scheduled to close by 2025.

Hpalace has beaten me to it re: EU.

More broadly, in terms of climate change, borders are utterly arbitrary. 200 independent countries with independent ideas, is the road to inaction and ruin.

Climate change and ecological destruction are an existential threat to humanity. The scale of the problem cannot be understated.

All I can see is targets when I looked, nothing really firm in terms of penalties. Even then they quote the 20 20 20. Too little too late and tell me what happens in London when areas exceed the pollution levels? Fark all.

20-20-20 targets

The EU's first package of climate and energy measures set*three*key objectives*for 2020:

a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions

increasing the share of renewable energy to 20%

making a 20% improvement in energy efficiency

These are known as the'20-20-20 targets'.

Err. Thats by next year. The 2030 target is

"Key EU targets for 2030
At least 40% cut in greenhouse gas emissions compared with 1990
At least 32% of total energy consumption from renewable energy
At least 32.5% increase in energy efficiency"

Then

"Long-term goal
By 2050, the EU aims to cut its emissions substantially – by 80-95% compared to 1990 levels as part of the efforts required by developed countries as a group.

Turning Europe into a highly energy efficient and low-carbon economy will also boost the economy, create jobs and strengthen Europe's competitiveness."

Then you have the EU can do Fark all question

For some reason links in the app do not work for me in your anticipated reply perhaps you can point me how close we are to meeting those 2020 targets or perhaps you answered it with the court cases, court cases that have not imposed any fines as of yet and are looking for policy from the offender's for trying to meet targets overshot in 2018 that were set in 2008 and had target dates in 2010.

Like I said fark all. Headlines do not make substance.

Yep look at the headlines where does it say WE MUST CHANGE rather than get these nut jobs of our streets.
The message that has been put across by the protesters is certainly NOT just disruption thats seeing the protests and not even attempting to understand them.

This is something that needs addressing and it's good that it's finally got some attention. The can just keeps getting kicked down the road and this inconvenient truth ignored.

Direct action is fine, if inconvenient. I am also glad it is being led by the young as it is they who will be most affected. However the likes of L&G and Skandia have the more direct approach which, when investing, would appear to be follow these ethical and social guidelines or we'll either not invest in you or disinvest from you. If lack of compliance in this area starts affecting Boardroom pay or the value of their options, they'll come round quick enough.

The EU is a difficult beast to move, but when it does legislate and regulate, eventually it carries through what it proposes.

Talk of ptotesters trying to shut down Heathrow tomorrow

In a secret Whatsapp group environmental campaigners have discussed abandoning road blocking actions in Central London and targeting London's Heathrow Airport.

Messages said that campaigners were going to "raise the bar. We are going to shut down Heathrow."
