A bit of Armageddon never hurt anybody.

If God’s prophecies are taking too long to be fulfilled, then it’s only right that you force the issue. They dream about all that fire and brimstone stuff those religious nutters.

I’m guessing this is not the time to point out that the US have a small air to ground missile called Hellfire, and the U.K. have one called Brimstone

I suppose we can assume that had the Montrose been nearer, the Iranians would've backed off?

Yes. Without question. But we only have one frigate we can put into the Gulf at the moment - that’s a guess but surely we would have sent more if we could have). And it cannot be everywhere at one. Note that the other ship they are sending is a Type 45 Destroyer (much more powerful but less suitable for dealing with little boats than a Type 23 Frigate is).

And if you were the Iranians, and you had lots of these little boats (their entire navy is pretty much little boats) and there was more than one vessel linked to the U.K. in the gulf, wouldn’t you have feigned towards one to draw the Montrose away before going for the one you really wanted?

Interesting recording of radio communications on the radio this morning apparently from the British Navy to the Iranians warning them off the Stena vessel.

They knew it was happening but could not, or did not stop it. Worrying situation as if a conflict starts which side will other nations come down on? In theory all the NATO countries should back the UK/US but would Russia, China and North Korea side with Iran?

Dangerous times.

If Iranian ships were bobbing about in the engerlish channel, you lot would all be pissing your knickers.
But it's fine to send your warships into the gulf.

The UK must be responsible for the safety of its own ships in the Gulf, the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has said.

Getting it yet?

Brexit Britain, striking out on its own as an independent nation, not at all reliant on allies.

Well, we better not be.

I think I read they (Royal Navy ship) were 25 miles away from the incident, so could not stop it or intervene.

Probably, it would depend on whether they wanted to see just how far we'd go. If we openned fire, then they might feel obliged to launch anti-ship missiles from the mainland in response, especially if there were casualties.

The problems of these 'stand off's and gunboat diplomacy, is that they do carry with them the very real possibility of getting yourself into a point where you do not have a choice but to escalate (and retaliate).

We seized a tanker, they seized a tanker, they shot down a drone, the US shot down a drone. Arguably we claim were justified under yadda yadda, they claim justification under yadda yadda. All it takes is one 'miscalculation' and you can very soon find yourself in a situation where you can't back done (and retain face at home).

For example, if a UK Vessel was sunk by an Iranian Vessels torpedo, regardless of the legality of the issue, the Defence Secretary and Prime Minister aren't going to get away politically without retaliating. The same probably applies in Iran - in reverse i.e. we sink an Iranian ship (maybe less so, thats the joy of Dictatorship - you don't have to worry about popularity as much).

Now even if these are by accident, you're looking at a situation where backing down is going to cost people their entire political career, but standing tall will get them a massive ground swell of support, irrespective of the actual consequences.

Probably on their way home soon. The Syrian project with the Iranians is far too important to jeopardise.

this is a real threat and I would expect why Montrose was sent (rather than one of the other Type 23s that are still running Sea Wolf). Also I would imagine why they are sending a destroyer in case some of the Iranian Air Force get jumpy.

Anyhue, Jeremy Hunt has announced (or at least appeared to) a European Task Force for the Gulf, outside of the US games.

Which, and try not to be shocked here, is actually pretty sensible.
