Saw Johnny Marr play the Royal Festival Hall last night - I was a bit disappointed there were no guests joining him on stage (Nile Rodgers introduced the set but didn't come back again, and I had hoped Bernard Sumner might have joined him for the Electronic songs, especially as he did that at a festival in Greece a couple of months back) but it was a great night all the same.

saw Royal Blood with Brighton_eagle last night at the De La Warr in Bexhill.
Very loud. lots of young people. Very big mosh pit for the older songs. They're not particularly charismatic, but was a good night.

Anyone following the Gene/Martin Rossiter spat?
I am a massive Gene fan (hence my Username, just in case anyone thought I was a world class decathlete). They split in 2004. Rossiter has released one solo album in the last 15 years & there is now to be a 'career closing set with a full band, spanning all eras of Gene & his solo work' gig at Shepherd's Bush next June. The rest of the band just released this statement; Statement from Matt, Steve and Kev they would like to share: "Following Martin's 'teasing' on social media, and eventual announcement yesterday, a number of Gene fans and associated industry people who worked with Gene have contacted us for clarification on what’s going on. Unfortunately, we only know what Martin has announced, as he did not see fit to let any of us know what he was planning. For someone usually so articulate, it seems he was a little lost for words in communicating something that he of course knew would be deeply hurtful for the other band members. Until this moment we would have been open to stand up with Martin again and play our (co-written!) songs. We all genuinely wished him well with his solo career and respected his decision to call time on his involvement when he did. We are now all very saddened (for Martin and our own memories of the band) to hear that our songs and musical parts will be performed by other musicians in this context. If it was a couple of songs in a set, played with a band and drawing from a wide range of solo material we would have no issue. However, as Martin has only released one solo LP since we split in 2004 it seems clear that the lion's share of this two-hour show will have to be filled with karaoke versions of Gene songs. For someone who prides himself as a man of the left this also seems a strangely capitalist move? To clarify, despite the poster leading with his name, it looks to us that Martin has found a way to 'do' Gene, including trading in, (the show concept & logo are clearly stated) without having to cut the other members in. We therefore feel that we should make it clear to ticket buyers that if you thought that the band were ok with it & it has our blessing - we are not & it doesn’t. It’s perfectly legal, but really not a very nice move by Martin. Especially with his lack of any pre-announcement courtesy. Of course everyone will have their own take on the credibility of the idea. We hope that if Martin has any respect for the other members of Gene he will have a rethink about how to finish his career. We all stand by 100% what we created together but this tarnishes it. On the hottest day of the year we were chilled to the bone... Matt, Steve, Kev " Ouch. I was planning to go (assumed through Rossiter's release & some industry titbits that the others would be playing) but won't be now. |

It's an extremely poor show when singers do this kind of shit. And it almost always is singers.

Meeting up with an old school buddy tonight and heading to Camden for a bit of nostalgia. We used to pitch up there regularly - Dingwalls in particular - but I've only been back there once in last several years.
Where's good for a spot of live music these days? Guitars, drums, you know the drill. Is Dublin Castle still decent?

PRobably Dingwalls. Not sure if DC still does live music or not on a regular basis. Blues Kitchen is alright. Looking at DC it looks like they have an Indie covers band tonight. There is a few decent pubs around though in Camden though. My favourites are Tapping The Admiral, Sheephavens Bay and then The Edinburgh Castle (which will be rammed!).

Last night saw the new lineup of Buena Vista Social Club at the Jazz Cafe. They're all young fellers in the band now coz unfortunately the original members have all passed (Cachaito Lopez, Ruben Gonzalez, Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer)
However, glad to say they're keeping the spirit alive with interpretations that respect tradition. Place was packed and some fancy dancin was seen ![]() When they sang the bolero 'Dos Gardenias', hardly a dry eye in the house. Great music, great night
