Dean kiely coaching could help revive Butland's career and help rebuild some confidence but £8m for a back-up keeper is too much. £4m would be very tempting (especially if VG rumours persist)

With all three palace GKs are over 30 now, as proved with Bass at Pompey, club is at least looking at players with lower ages and for a GK with experience, Butland may come into the club's thinking.

People are writing off Butland far too quickly, yes he has had a dodgy period but Stoke themselves have been a shambles on and off the field for the past 2 seasons, so its not all down to Butland.
Lets not forget not so long ago he was Englands no.1 and wanted by many clubs, he is 27 so has more improvement still to come, and at 8m can we really get better value for an experienced keeper in todays market. When we say he has gone backwards well that happens with most players, look at De Gea surely nobody can say he is useless? its just that with Keepers it gets highlighted much more easily, if Guaita were to leave i am sure Roy will be in there like a shot.

There was an excellent documentary on the BBC called "The Edge" about the rise of the England Cricket team to no.1 test team and the aftermath. Aside from probably Cook, Anderson, Broad and Collingwood (who was coming to the end of his career) the others paid a certain price either physically or mentally as a result.
Yes, I saw that. Trott was very interesting in that film and it very moving.

I have wondered if he has simply lost motivation from Stoke and needs a fresh start. He has been stuck at a club on quite a slide.

I think I agree although it is really hard to know if a fresh start will get him back to form or whether there is a deeper problem with him now. 8m is still a lot of money to risk on a player who has been out of form for so long.

Butland had a pretty bad injury - maybe knee around 2017.
Perhaps it's since then he hasn't performed to his 2016 level, when he was clearly the best England keeper in my view.

He was decent in the lead up to the 2018 World Cup despite Stoke being relegated.

Don’t watch Stoke enough, or have access to good enough championship stats to really judge. If VG was to go, and our scouts felt it realistic that Butland could return to near the same level he was in 2016ish, then yes please.

Won’t spend this sort of money on a keeper when we have VG.

We need a second keeper and Heno is not good enough.

I don't recall this drop off in form in keepers when they should be reaching the peak previously.I don't remember Clemence or Shilton turning shit, or Seaman and Martyn etc

Butland looked so good - but has been beyond woeful for the last 2 seasons for Stoke

Hart - looked superb for Man City, season after season, then was suddenly woeful

De Gea - after bedding in and a baptism of fire, was the best keeper in the prem and possibly the world, but again has dropped bollock after bollock for the last two seasons

As for Kepa and Pickford, I am not sure how if they have ever been any good in the first place. I would honestly prefer Hennessey in goal over Pickford. he is clearly one of Southgate's creepy favourites - but in fairness I am not sure he has ever let England down the way he consistently does Everton.

The keeper who has been superb for the last two seasons - IMHO - is Foster at Watford. I didn't rate him that much earlier in his career but whenver I have seen him play in the last two seasons he has been fantastic.

Pope at Burnley has been the best English keeper this season, Henderson has shown a lot of promise, Pickford has been the worst by some margin

Next summer on a free and it’s a different proposition altogether. VG is good but he’s 34?

Looking at the GK stats for last season you can make an argument that Butland was the different between making the playoffs and a season of struggle. Stats suggest he was pretty much the worst keeper in the Championship just like Kepa was the worst 1st choice keeper in the PL. No chance anyone is paying £8-10m for him.

Like other posters have said, he had an absolute nightmare last season. They've a cheek asking £8m. It regularly got mentioned on 5Live.

Just for added emphasis... We might very well sell Guaita for less than we'll pay for Butland.

This just can't be possible. This thread should be closed haha.
