I don't remember the middle two (which don't really add much), but the Gordon Brown was definitely talking about a scenario where Labour finished third behind the Lib Dems (the idea being it wasn't credible for a PM to be the person who came third in share of the vote).

Though surely Brown would have resigned in such circumstances anyway.

Quote:
Jo said:

“In East Dunbartonshire, and up and down the country, the debate people are having is not over the minutiae of the Lisbon Treaty – it is over Britain’s future in Europe.

“This is backed up by a MORI survey carried out this week. The poll showed that 54% of the public favoured a referendum on EU membership, 27% were against a referendum and 19% did not express an opinion.

“When asked – ‘if there were to be a referendum on Britain’s relationship with Europe, would you prefer it to be a referendum only on the Lisbon Treaty, or a referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union?’ – the public preferred a membership referendum by a margin of more than 2:1.

“Clearly the real debate is not over the contents of this Treaty but the issue of Europe as a whole. Sadly, it is a debate the British people will not be given the chance to vote on, because of the actions of Labour and Tory MPs.”

Why do people consider it a bad thing for people to change their minds on stuff? As if the world would be better or progress if everyone had a rigid view on everything and never made any effort to check to see if they are right, or discover something different or new.

Quite.

One of the real benefits of the internet - vide WCB - is that your views on an issue at one time in history are recorded and assumed to be thereafter your views on the topic for evermore. Because of course people aren’t allowed to change their minds.

Not to mention a comment you made 10 years ago is not likely to prohibit you from being allowed as a candidate.

Doesn't matter than in 10 years your views might change, you might mature, that you realise now what you said was wrong. You are done and will never be allowed to stand.

I am a similar age to Jo Swinson and to suggest that someone approaching their 40s holds precisely the same views and values as someone did in their 20s is frankly bonkers. I must be full of hypocrisy according to cockles.

In fairness to Jo, she didn't make any comment in that article as to whether she would go on to respect the outcome. She just wanted a referendum and was cross that the other parties didn't.

Although that piece from Jo was published about the same time her then party leader was issuing very similar pamphlets calling for a referendum and to win a leave vote. In essence at that time (not so long ago) the Lib Dems were a leave party.

Of course Jo and the Lib Dems are entitled to change their views/stance however some may ask if her change in position came before or after her husbands organisation started to receive a large yearly grant from the EU?

I was being facetious. It's great to see these clowns being shown up and just as funny that there is such one eyed tribalism on the BBS. Johnson, Corbyn, Swinson - they're all slippery opportunistic wankers promising the earth but they're all just in it for themselves.

Take 5 minutes to research jo Swinson’ husbands role in the company he works for, their point and their many sources of funding. Also think about how patronising it is to suggest that the leader of a national party would define her role in politics based on her husbands non commission role in a middle to upper middle management company of that nature.

You bothered to go and look at their published information yet? Or are you going to keep peddling this bollocks?

I think we've all been guilty of faux pan's and boo boo's over the years, the odd unfunny comment about ethnic minorities, gay lords and boobies, we're all rotters really, but we do get old, become more tolerant, learn what's acceptable, both in the work place and down the boozer.

I don't do Facebook or twatter, but I agree that it's a bit of a rum do that one off the cuff comment from years ago, can be taken down and used in evidence against you

I note, pre boxing, that there was a smattering of anti austerity protests at Swinson yesterday and her vaunted battle bus.. Most may have forgotten, not all

Especially as comments are being brought up from 10 years ago. Facebook was in its infancy then, Twitter is only 13 years old.

In 20-30 years it is possible 40-50 years olds are having to apologise for comments they made when they were teenagers and being stopped from running. Something needs to be done.

Indeed I did some weeks ago. I am not suggesting anything other than its a question some people may ask her. It's a complicated world !

It's not complicated at all unless you're deliberately trying to spread misinformation.
