That M&S and Sainsburys seems quite new (not sure exaclty how old), and isn't exactly small - can't imagine it would be cheap to buy out a flagship sized freehold/leasehold of two national stores, and put a stadium in its place.

That plot is also home to the remains of Merton Abbey (the supermarket complex currently covers it, but it is protected underneath). I would hazard a guess that that would have to be protected, and not easy to build a stadium around. Merton Abbey Mills would benefit from increased numbers though, so I can see the benefit of that.

The current dog track stadium and surrounding area is crying out for redevelopment, but next to the Plough Lane/Haydons Road original stadium, and would be a easier option, in theory, to redevelop.

Plus I wouldn't have to find somewhere else to do a big food shop.

The M&S part is newish... Certainly the Savacentre has been there years. I remember my Nan took me there when I was about 10 years old, so like 18 years ago.

I guess if Merton want the team back in the borough they'll be willing to ship them out so to speak. The whole area around the current Supermarket(s) is car parks etc so I guess they'd use the already existing infrastructure to build a stadium, and let's face it, what's the maximum they will need... 15,000-20,000. It won't need to be huge!

Oh no... Please forgive me for posting something that I have an interest in. Next you'll be giving me some bs about how I'm not a true Palace supporter and how I'm scum or some nonsense. Yet I dare say you've never questions when people post threads about Barcelona, or Arsenal etc etc.

PS. I know Wimbledon played in Blue prior to 1992 as I'd seen images from Palace videos (funny that) and the FA Cup final in 1988, but I didn't realise the Navy was a whole new thing altogether from 1993.

PPS. I have a Palace season ticket holder since 1993/94 season when I was 9 years old, and been going to games since 1990. So your last bit doesn't really make any sesone what so ever!

Wimbledon agree to put Brendan Kiernan on the transfer list

AFC Wimbledon have confirmed that a written transfer request has been received on behalf of Brendan Kiernan and this has been agreed to by the club.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who is under contract for next season, made one start and seven substitute appearances during 2011/12, but Brendan now wishes to leave AFC Wimbledon and he has been put on the transfer list.

Chief Executive Erik Samuelson said: “Brendan is a talented player and Terry Brown had earmarked him as part of his long-term plans. That is why we offered him an extended contract in January, which he signed. However, Brendan now wishes to leave the club and we have decided not to stand in his way. We are seeking a fee for his transfer."

I'm quite surprised about some of the released players to be honest.

Turner and Jones are understandable as I doubt they were ever pushing for a first team place. I thought Bush and Franks however may have another year or two to prove themselves.

Whilst the defence does seem to be a problem. To release three experienced centeral defenders in one go, as well as both Bush and Franks seems a massive risk in my eyes as their gambling on an entire new defence that they suppose will gel quickly.

Ricky Wellard is another one i'm surprised about because due to the little i've seen of him he looked like a fairly decent League Two player. Still if they think they can sign better I don't blame them.

Kieron Dijiali I can understand. He must be on pretty big wages and he didn't really seem to fit with their style of play.

Too right. F**k AFC, they won't be getting a standing ovation off me that's for sure. They hate us and the feeling's mutual as far as I'm concerned.

Most of their non-league compatriots were glad to see the back of them having given it Bertie Big Bollox everywhere they went. A couple of seasons ago they kicked-off down at Carshalton Athletic one evening damaging cars and property after the game. Great club my arse

Let's be honest though if we'd have gone out of business in 2010 and had to start again in say the Ryman League can you honestly say that none of our supporters would have the same attitude as said AFC Wimbledon fans?

How highly is Christian Jolley rated? I played against him when he was at Oxted quite a few times and you could see then he had the makings of a very good player?? He's also a top bloke and nice guy.

AFC Wimbledon youth products sign professional contracts

AFC Wimbledon are pleased to announce that youngsters Frankie Merrifield and Jim Fenlon have signed professional contracts for next season.

Both products of our youth system, the 18-year-old pair have impressed Terry Brown enough for him to put them into his first-team squad for next season.

After signing on the dotted line yesterday afternoon, it was a particularly proud moment for Jim as it is his first professional contract. The full-back, who can play on either flank, joined AFC Wimbledon Under-16s after returning to England from Australia, where he played football for his state to aid his development. “It is great to sign my first professional contract at AFC Wimbledon,” he said. “I lived in Australia for six years and played for my state Western Australia and Stirling Lions, but Wimbledon is my first English club. The standard in Australia was quite good, but it is a lot quicker here.

"Since joining Wimbledon Under-16s, Mark Robinson (Head of Youth), has helped me a lot with my tackling and heading and to make me a better player over the past two years. Right-back is my preferred position, but I can also play on the left and I have always tried to play with both feet since I was younger. Hopefully, I can do well in training with the first-team and get a chance next season to show what I can do.”

Frankie, a midfielder, signed his first professional contract with the Dons last December, but his impressive form for the reserves last season has earned a new deal.

He said: “This is the second contract that I have signed here and I am delighted really. I needed to work hard during the season to get another chance and luckily that has happened. I felt that I was fairly consistent for the reserves last season. Marcus Gayle showed me how to be mentally strong and how to understand the game more in terms of the physical side of things. Marcus is a good manager and he helped me a lot."

"I joined Wimbledon Under-16s after a trial and I know all about the history of the club. The future of the club looks bright as well and I am excited about getting a chance to play for Wimbledon. I was happy for Huw (Johnson) when he made his first-team debut and I was there watching him. That encouraged me to push on and try and do better. I have trained with the first-team a couple of times and I cannot wait to start full-time training with the first-team squad in pre-season.”

Terry Brown said: “I am pleased to announce that we have signed two of our best young players,” he said. “They will now come on board with the first-team squad during pre-season and hopefully they can play a part in League 2 next season.”

Wimbledon receives Football League award

AFC Wimbledon has been recognised by the Football League for providing families with a quality match day experience.

Our debut season in the Football League ended with survival in League 2 and the governing body has acknowledged that we are getting it right off the pitch by selecting Wimbledon for its Family Excellence Award.

Created in 2007, the award is based on an independent assessment, commissioned by the Football League, of the family experience at all 72 League clubs during the 2011/12 season. This is carried out using "mystery shopper" families and recognises the outstanding experience clubs provide for young fans and families at their grounds. A record 50 clubs from across all three divisions of The Football League were given the Award for 2012 – topping the previous highest total of 47 – with nine clubs securing it for the fifth year running. A total of eight clubs, including Wimbledon, also won the award for the first time this year.

In announcing the successful clubs, Football League Chairman, Greg Clarke, said: “The Football League Family Excellence Award provides clubs with a benchmark in their efforts to attract families through their gates. It is hugely encouraging to see that the number of clubs receiving the accolade is at its highest ever level, demonstrating The Football League’s commitment to securing the next generation of fans.”

The judges were particularly impressed with the efforts made to engage with families through matchday entertainment, refreshment facilities and mascot activities, ensuring they can enjoy the match in a dedicated, safe, welcoming and entertaining environment.

The Football League has also recognised the clubs delivering the very best family experience in each division through the ‘Family Club of the Year’ award at this season’s Football League Awards. Portsmouth, Huddersfield, Tranmere Rovers, Swindon Town, Dagenham & Redbridge and Cardiff City were shortlisted with Portsmouth being announced as eventual overall winners. Huddersfield picked up the League 1 accolade with Swindon crowned as League 2 winners.
