I suppose I could chuck in Boris Johnson and the Conservative & Unionist Party's instant readiness to chuck their Ulster brethren under a bus the minute they get a sniff of possible electoral advantage but it's just so not surprising.

But I do wonder what happened to "our precious Union".

Yet another Constitutional paradox left brutally exposed by Brexit.

There’s just so many; a personal favourite being that we mustn’t be a “vassal state” of the EU even though we weren’t/aren’t, yet cosying up to the US in the hope of being a subservient 51st state of the US seems to be absolutely fine.

How about "Government of National Unity"? Which was going to be formed because we are so badly split that the most important issue can't get voted through Parliament.

Not really a paradox or a hypocrisy strictly speaking, more like bullshit really.

This.

There's also something creepy about the way Rees-Mogg says it. I'm pretty sure he's fantasising about being dressed in women's underwear having an orange shoved in his gob by Jean Claude Juncker while Donald Tusk leers "you're in a vassel state now Jacob".

The biggest paradox is that we are here in this ridiculous situation as a result of the Remain campaign in 2016.
If they only campaigned accentuating the good of the EU rather than threatening the population with total negativity, i'm sure Remain would have won.
However, I'm convinced a large chunk of leavers voted that way to simply give the remain supporting politicians a "black eye".
And as for Cameron, calling it on in the first place..

It goes to show the kind of twat who makes this statement, given the UK would still be a vassel state, as we recieve military aid a) as part of NATO and b) from the US. A primary characteristic of vassal states is that they are dependent on other allied nations for maintaining soverign security. It also applies to a state which provides military assistance or support, when requested to another state (ie the UK with the US and NATO).

As a more humour irony, a nation that provides tribute or payment, but is not military dependent for security, ie the EU, would be a tributary state.

The terms really apply more to a feudal structures of the Medival period. Possibly demonstrating that whilst the likes of JRM and BJ might have a classical educational bent and enjoying using references, they probably didn't pay that much attention to details in class.

Presenting the idea of being a vassel state as being somehow a negative is a really bad representation of how vassel states operated as independent states within a structure of mutual military self dependence.

Also technically all british overseas territories, NI, Wales and Scotland along with some Commonwealth nations are also UK Vassal states (such as Nepal) - largely as a basis of the British Empire.

All five sections and single schedule of it! How big is Johnson's withdrawal bill?

Yep, but needs must when the devil drives. Whilst Parliment can turn law around fairly quickly, its not a good idea. For the Benn act, less so, as it defines a single one off event, that is contextually very specifically defined to an individual and an event, thats never reusable.

Which is how you should do emergency acts, by mitigating the risk of it becoming a problem.

Where as trying to define a bill like the Brexit deal, like trying to get it passed in 10 days, when no one outside of the government itself has actually read it yet, is rash and irresponsible
