On the one hand, I entirely agree that he shouldn't have been knighted as a result of his actions.

On the other hand it does highlight just exactly how absurd the system of peerage is that it would regard a man who punched his girlfriend 20 times, in the face and body, worthy of such a status - thus underlining exactly how 'patriarchal and mysognist' such a system can be.

No doubt some people will point to him never being convicted etc. but when you've got a woman with a broken nose, evidence of a sustained beating I think we can forgo with setting the criteria for knighthood as not requiring a 'beyond reasonable doubt'

After all, we're not sending the man to prison here, we're prohibiting him from being a knight of the realm.

I'd be the first to agree, that a persons persoanlity and behaviour doesn't exclude them from being good at something. It is however very questionable to honour such people as exempler.

I dare say he's not the first, he won't be the last, and the history of scummy people being rewarded by peerage and knighthoods has a long history and explains just how s*8t this system can be - that society can overlook someone who has been openly racist and mysogenistic because he was good at hitting a ball with a bat.
