By these people, you mean Labour MPs?

I mean Chavez/Maduro apologists. Frankly it's a scandle that any Labour MP should be one, but unfortunately there are a few.

Chris Williamson is actively shilling for Maduro, pumping out pro-regime propoganda about how no one is starving and everything is fine.

Naughty apologists.

Seems to be nobody is interested in helping the problem though. Socialist, liberal, right wing or whatever side.

Question, therefore: how does this new unelected leader help the people of Venezuela?

Whilst everything is certainly not fine, what is going on would not appear to be related to a desire to help the Venezuelan people.

Free and fair elections help the people of Venezuela by allowing them to elect who they want. Including Maduro if they wished. The problem is they don't, which is why Maduro went down this route after the people voted for opposition parties in the national assembly.

In the short to medium term Venezuela will need massive aid programmes, which won't be forthcoming while countries (rightly) think that their aid is just going to be used to prop up a dictator.

this new unelected ruler is simply calling for free elections.

Which give the enormous **** up that Chavez/Maduro have made of the economy, the imprisonments, the disappearances, the vast vast corruption, the human capital flight, the banditry, the fact that rather than spending oil money on food and medicines, they’ve spent it on weaponry, oh the everything, given all that simply asking for free elections seems reasonable.

Which totally ignores the fact that the forces backing the coup don’t care for the people of Venezuela. Look all over South America where there is abject poverty. While democracy is precious, so is a basic standard of living.

You’re every bit as bad as those that back the regime but a mirror image.

Call me cynical, but they'll provide 'aid' to anyone who will let them get their mitts on the oil.

The US maybe, but they aren't even the main players in this (though they still have outsized influence).

The driving force has been the 14 Lima Group countries, which includes Canada but not the US.

Trying to make it all about oil is just shitty Orientalism (only in the other direction, Occidentalism?), making it all about "Western imperialism" and robbing Venezuelans and the rest of Latin America of any agency of their own.

**** that. It's Venezuelas neighbours who have been bearing the brunt of supporting those fleeing Maduro, and it's Latin America who is leading the drive for free and fair elections.

Except loads of people in the opposition have atrocitious politics and don’t care about the Venezuelan people either. But then again neither do you really, it’s just your usual point scoring. And as usual devoid of any real politics.

Venezuela has the number 1 oil reserves in the world and the neo-liberal establishment are licking their lips.

Surprise, surprise, US-educated Guaidó wants to privatise the oil industry, but 81% of Venezuelans have never even heard of him.

Not true.

Is this the same neo-liberal establishment that faked a plane hitting the pentagon, in order to hide the real plane somewhere it's never been discovered for reasons no one can work out, while at the same time flying two real planes into the twin towers as an excuse to secretly blow them up?

President Maduro won free and fair elections were validated by hundreds of international observers.

Now the US and the EU call for fresh elections, whilst backing their own pet dictatorships elsewhere in the world.

No he didn't. That's why Venezuela were suspended from Mercosur, for violation of the democratic principle. The decision to suspend was unanimous.
