I saw him in Melbourne.. think it was last year... of all gigs i've been to, it was the oddest. Came on stage with the band, played their music without a uttering a single word... not even a hello to the crowd or name of song or anything throughout the gig. At end they bowed and went off stage, once again without a single word or a thank you!!.
I guess it matters not as in the end we went to hear the music and lyrics.

Totally agree about Rolling Thunder Review. The version of It Ain't Me Babe is sensational (esp. the bass guitar).
I am definitely OK with the man's voice on record but live was a different story.I saw him about 10 years ago over here and it was like he had said to the band "Let's see what crap I can get away with tonight.". I do get that all artists need to re-work and reinterpret their songs as they get older but this was just ridiculous as he seemingly on purpose mauled song after song.. Shades of McCartney recording Mary Had a Little Lamb. More positively, his harmonica playing that night was very good and that took me back to the sixties.

There is a Martin Scorsese documentary film about the Rolling Thunder revue due out later this year.

No comparison. Neil Young's voice was absolutely incredible. Considering the guy's in his seventies I don't think it's too bad even now.

I went to a festival where Bob Dylan played about five years ago and what I heard cannot be considered singing. I'm not sure it's technically speaking either, it was just a sort of gutteral noise that seemed to just get louder and quieter completely independently of the music. I was, however, surrounded by Dylan fanatics who seemed more deluded than the Michael Jackson fans who think he just liked the odd sleepover.

There's a great NY video on youtube where he spends an age rifling through his pockets picking up various parts of a harmonica. A brilliant performance of Heart of Gold and Old Man. He reminds me of a scarecrow these days.

Dylan just sounds like a Bullfrog now, and as for that Christmas album...

Yup, agree completely. I was never much a fan of Old Man until I heard that performance - when he rips into the chorus it sends shivers down the spine (in a good way!)

Great song. I think it was about his gardener or something. His wobbly voice actually sounds better live.

Neil Young has done some great stuff although I sometimes wish he had spent more time on the production and playing on some of his material. When he does, he still makes very listenable albums like 'Prarie Wind'.

Decade is a good compilation for new listeners.

I "get" his voice, but anyone who believes that since the late 70´s his voice has steadily declined is rather deluding themselves. Of his later stuff I have always liked this...To view the link you have to Register or Login

Dylan...a man capable of eliciting strong emotion from his listeners. Whether biting social commentary (only a pawn in their game), unrequited love (she belongs to me OR boots of spanish leather), racial injustice (hurricane) or just pure storytelling (frankie lee & judas priest)....the man is a genius, and I don't say that lightly.
Like Hendrix, not blessed with a fantastic voice but you miss the point of Dylan if you focus on just that element. He can paint a thousand pictures with just his words, and there ain't many who can do that.
