Yes very true so he maybe lying but something about all of this just does not seem right to me. That could simply be down to my lack of faith in May and the machiavellian nature of many in her party.

It is not just May. Very senior civil servants too. It is not a party thing, it is a government thing.

This man would have had to have been involved

It can be both a party thing and a government thing especially as many within the Tory party are plotting to bring May down. So my guess this is more a party thing than a government one but obviously in terms of the country this is about national security so the importance is the government side of it.

So providing this was a deliberate leak and the suspect(s) has already been discovered or will be let us hope they are charged and if found guilty go to jail.

Party or Government isn’t relevant. Breaking the law is. Surely the only way to discover whose pants are on fire is for a criminal investigation by the Police.

Hold on, this decision was going to be made public anyway, so whoever leaked it hardly broke a state secret, merely altered the timing of the announcement - presumably for political advantage.

If it does end up a criminal investigation, won’t it just be as easy as asking the journalist in question who leaked the information to them?

Williamson 'swears on his children's lives' he was not behind the leak. He is either an utter f*** (which is possible), or he has been stitched up royally by May.

My suspicion is the leak was designed to change the decision, not just the timing.

There’s case law here. Goodwin v. United Kingdom. I am not sure whether it would hold up, but I suspect the media would certainly use it to argue not to disclose

May is saying that the matter is closed and no police investigation is necessary. Why would she not want this looked into further? Surely it's not up to her to say either?

If Williamson is innocent he should just stroll into his local police station with media in tow and make a complaint of a serious crime to be investigated.

Eh? All state secrets are simply a matter of timing.

This government is beyond parody.

If Williamson did leak this, then he should be prosecuted, unbelievable that a Defence Minister would do this.
This is how I feel about this shambles.

That is a possibility however who decides if the police get involved or not?

As this is considered a matter of national security surely even for the sake of transparency this deserves further investigation beyond that of an internal one.

Whereas I understand oppo MP's are wetting themselves at getting a conviction so they can get a by election, all he's been accused of is leaking a commercial decision, confidential but hardly an important state secret. I doubt he'd be convicted. I also doubt evidence will ever found to reach a conviction anyway, so I'm not too excited about that.

As far as I know the reporter that broke the story Steven Swinford has neither confirmed or denied that it was Williamson. I doubt he would, it would be a career ending admission for him. I also doubt even a div like Williamson would actually leak something like that directly on his own phone.

Personally, in this case I see the leak as a good thing. The decision is nuts and people can start working against it.

I see from reports that behind his back he's known as Private Pike.

Big difference between 3 weeks and 30 years though.

Interesting case, someone leaked a decision presumably to help state secrecy

To be fair, Mordaunt has a pretty good background for the job. She's a Royal Navy reservist; her dad was a paratrooper; and she was previously Minister of State for the Armed Forces.

She's also related to Angela Lansbury, so maybe she should have investigated the leak.
