We should be looking to bring in someone like this now, give them a year to bed in before Wilf goes.

We need them on the other wing, or Wilf playing up front. But we need options to cover injuries and clapping offences too.

Townsend/Wilf/Max + who ever could all be interchangeable in terms of position and if needs be sitting on the bench and coming on.

Finding younger gems would be better. Eze at QPR looks decent - might still cost £10-15M but still looks value and that will increase if he improves.

We rely so heavily on Wilf as have so few impact/flair players who can make a difference.

Great signing for Watford, and one that would have surely improved our attacking prowess.
Why are we so s***at player recruitment?
If we end up with only signing an aging Cahill who played twice last year, Ayew who was here on loan last year and a 3rd choice keeper then IMO we are pretty f****d and will be lucky to stay up.
And if you add McCarthy to that list the joke just gets better.

In an ideal world but it seems we are a long way off being able to buy a player a year before we sell the player they're replacing.

I actually wouldn't have minded us buying someone like Sarr and selling Wilf this window but in an ideal world we would have a goal scorer here and settled before we sell Wilf.

I think there are ways of structuring a deal. Also we would have the ability to borrow cash against revenue streams. It's not ideal but i thought this summer we might take the risk with a couple of players. I was wrong.

We rely on Wilf yes - but getting someone for reasonable money who can understudy him is a huge challenge. The owners have injected over £50m in loans into the club in the past 4 years, as of the next accounts we will probably still owe £10-15m on past transfers let, overall in the last accounts we lost around £35m. Those sorts of figures just don't allow us to spend £15-20m on Maxim or £30m (which would be a club record) for Sarr is they are not going to start every game. Are they better than Wilf? Probably not. Are they better than Andros? Skill wise maybe but do they bring the other stuff to the game that he does like workmate, tackling back etc? We will see this season.

Simon Jordan borrowed cash against future revenue streams.....JAT. nAnd as stated above - the various owners have already loaned over £50m primarily to fund players in recent years.

Yep. The likes of Watford, Wolves, Bournemouth and Leicester seem to be focused on quality young talent.

Lots of clubs do it and we're in nothing like the position under SJ

Borrowing against an asset like Zaha would only be a risk if he gets crocked.
My point was brining in someone with some real ability to kick on would have been sensible, esp after another summer of Zaha upheaval and the fact he'll be gone next summer anyway.

I don't disagree with the principle regarding the players - but the fact remains that we have lost money at a significant level in the last set of accounts and probably again this year just gone. When we have other areas in need of strengthening - RB, CM, Striker which need investment, a major buy at the level needed to get Sarr for example, to bed in someone for what "may" happen next season is not logical business.

Right now we have spent....

Signing on fee for Henderson (probably small but still has to be paid)
Fee and sign on fee for Ayew
Significant sign on fee for Cahill
Probably committed around £15m on Camarasa

with probably 2 more players potentially in the £10-15m mark still to come just to get us upto strength.

They seem to have no strategy at all to be fair. If they had we wouldn't be scrambling madly to fill out our squad every window.

The insanity was the Cabaye, Sahko and Benteke signings. In huge wages large fees none of which we would get back any resale value.

Unsustainable for a club of our size.

Hugely unlikely funky? He would be an amazing signing, unreal pace. Surely only happen as a replacement for wilf? Him and Batshuayi/mitrivic and £15m leftover for wilf I could learn to live with.
