Too precocious for me. I had to earn money working at 16 to help pay the bills.

UK Overshoot day is May 17th.

If the rest of the world lived like the UK, the world would run out of sustainable resources by May 17th. This means the UK would need to be x2.66 as big as it already is to sustain the rate of consumption.

The Earth Biocapacity is also reducing due to deforestation, ecosystem loss, rising sea levels, and unsustainable development.

The UK is NOT "pretty much there". Whilst its true that the amount of emissions per capita has reduced from 10.3 tonnes in 1980 to 5.59 tonnes, the amount needs to reduce even further for the UK to have a sustainable biocapacity.

"We contribute less than 1%" - The global average is 4.9 tonnes per capita. The UK is above average.

It’s not nice embarrass people like that, especially in front of all their friends.

I believe they call it “fact shaming”. It’s a thing now.

Post-brexit, there's going to be a lot of trade deals done with powerful countries whereby immigration will be part of any bargain struck. This ought to worry the far-right.

In the real world where people's green credentials are manifested by their actions and not by how they react to the far-right's position on it, I can vouch that very few people, really, are particularly green. I'd even hazard that most Green Party voters are slobs.

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.” That phrase–surplus population–is what first tipped me off to Dickens' philosophical agenda. He's taking aim at the father of the zero-growth philosophy, Thomas Malthus.

Malthus was wrong anyway:

Thanks for that, well as I said, pretty much there, a reducing 5.59 isn't far from 4.9 and remember that figure includes a lot of the world that doesn't need to heat their home.

Biocapacity is pretty much stable here, not much we can do about forest burning in Brazil or the far east. I believe the President of Brazil has just told everybody to feck off on this subject.

I really can't get excited because a schoolgirl has had a hissy fit.

I see that Malthus was writing in 1798. Right in the middle of the Rees-Mogg period.

Still no consideration that she is highly influenced by her far left mother. Being autistic its hard to say if shes super intelligent or extremely influenced to the point of being her mothers mouthpiece.

I just dont get what part 'brainwashing' dont you understand?

Why trust a 16 year olds opinion on anything of such major importance? Would u trust her on the economy, policing, crime, education..etc?

I fully get how she can 'inspire' a generation of youth but ADULTS being strung along. Very bizarre indeed. Cult like.

Ultimately I don't see it is a battle between left and right, more so a battle between dreamers and pragmatists. The people who deny the science can get in the sea and not resurface until they've come up with a viable way to harness tidal power.

I do think there needs to be some perspective. We are not there already which was said earlier but we have made great progress (top of G20 To view the link you have to Register or Login) and the years of having to subsidise renewable energy seems to be paying off as it starts to become profitable on its own. These market forces will increase the scale and number of projects even more as they become easier to fund and the speed of change will accelerate exponentially.

What does worry me is two things:

1) You cannot rush change because you end up fudging it and making things worse.
2) Telling kids they are going to be killed within ten years seems irresponsible as far as I can see (they aren't even if we went back to the Victorian era for ten years).
3) Why has it been hijacked by the left wing as a political issue? Why are the Socialist Worker printing out placards at a climate rally that have nothing to do with the climate and everything to do with communism? As far as I can work out every political party acknowledges the need to tackle the issue, the governemnt is signed up to the Paris agreement and has commited ot zero emmisions by 2050 (nobody else has as far as I am aware) at the cost of £1trillion. Yes, it would be better to do it in ten years but how much would it cost? At least triple that!

Finally environmental activists will have to make some difficult choices and prioritise. You can't demand a complete shut down of fossil fuels but also be against Nuclear and complain about complain about projects like the Swansea Tidal Lagoon because of the ecological impact.

Either way the below website is oddly fascinating if you want to know what's going on in real time:

Truth is much of the issues we are facing are the fault of the younger generations. The UK had a large fleet of electric powered vehicles delivery of a important good stuff in reusable non plastic containers. Most people now buy the same product in large plastic containers having driven to a large supermarket that in many cases planted concrete and tarmac on green land and which uses vast amounts of non green energy.

Yes we made the milkman redundant just to save a few pennies a pint. Not to mention the good community work often supplied by the milkman in keeping an eye on and company for the elderly.

So many examples of how " progress" and over reliance on supermarkets has contributed to climate change/pollution

I studied Malthus at university. Interesting stuff even though it is very simplistic.

1. She’s not autistic. Another thing to add to the list of things you are ignorant about.
2. If you bothered to listen or read, you’d know that her whole point is to push politicians and leaders to cut through the rhetoric and to listen to the science. The stuff that is almost globally agreed by actual scientists. The stuff That is being wilfully ignored in favour of big business and politics.

You’re either intentionally ignorant and have your head in the sand or breathtakingly selfish. Or most likely both.
