Of course. The English language is a movable feast and whatnot, which is why it is so smashing unlike the filthy tongue of Johnny Crapaud. I, however, am not the one who got a bit "confused" about the origin of the word.

So on the final day of Parliament sitting before it is prorogued an hour is wasted with people telling Bercow what a great man he is.

Good job there is nothing better for Parliament to be discussing.

John Bercow

Top bloke. As evidence by this thread the guy has been roasting hams for fun over the last 10 years.

What’s another hour after wasting three years?

Pomposity? Dunno, you need a fair amount of neck to deal with that house full of nutjobs. He's done a decent job, considering the circumstances of the last three years.

That was already happening, it was Bercow's decision to allow an hour and a half of tributes.

Because there is a load of stuff they have to get done today before Parliament shuts so an hour is actually quite a long time. The have potentially 2 emergency debates, several debates on Northern Ireland and the early election motion before they finish.

Gonna be a late one.

It is possible to take a balanced view on Bercow. I thought for the first few years he was an exceptional speaker, and has made the HOC much more influenced by the back benches. That is undoubtedly a good thing.

Recently, anyone can see that he has been partisan in favour of Remain. It's fairly obviously no coincidence that Remain MPs love him and Brexit MPs don't, it isn't rocket science. Add to that the multiple bullying accusations (very convenient timing for him to stand down as the investigations get going) and the constant self-indulgence and waffling in the last couple of years and it's pretty clear he went on too long.

He has done a very good job on upholding a lot of the traditions whilst also trying to bring it into modern times.

Like everyone, he has been stretching parliamentary procedure and protocol over the passed 3 years.

He was a nasty piece of work at university - strolling about in his pinstriped suit with his mates from the BNP. Founder member of the 'White Gentlemen's Group' on campus. Don't trust a word he says but have approved of the way he has upheld parliamentary rule.

There seems to be no rule about whether a Speaker come from one party or the other, but once elected The Speaker doesn't take a whip or belong to a party and stands at an election - by convention effectively unopposed - in his or her own right. The Speaker can't vote either so if a party gives up a seat in the Commons to provide the Speaker he or she should pair off with an opposing MP.

However the Speaker has a lot of power because he or she selects the amendments to Bills that are put up for debate.

The single only reference to that group on the internet is this thread.

Bit odd that.
