There's been talk of one or two first team friendlies behind closed doors. Likely they would have played in those instead of the U23s.

Made for an interesting afternoon, what with familiar faces off the pitch and the kind of weather that made football such a lottery when playing it as a kid.

Blackburn were well worth the win. They wanted it more as a team and played to their strengths. We were disjointed, some good performances, Street and Kirby in particular though neither of them got much support from players around them. It was hard to believe that Lokilo was the same player we thought had promise a season or two ago; he looked disinterested for large parts of the game. McGregor on as a sub at half time looked good for 15-20 minutes.

Missing a first half penalty didn't help, nor did the injuries to 2 of the back four.

And Blackburn's keeper, Joe Hilton, must be one of the tallest keepers around.

Also the tempo of the games is so slow. They wouldn't gain too much.

Agree that Blackburn were worth the win, but Palace could easily have won 3-1 themselves.

Flanagan dragged a penalty onto the post, Street crashed a shot off the bar, McGregor went close, Kirby hit the post.

It was an alright game, as far as U23 games go. Trouble is they just didn't look interested some of them.

You can tell that half of them have been together in this team for two years too long and need a new challenge.

'it would be boring if they won every time right?'

To be, or not to be, that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep,
No more; and by a sleep to say we end

Although I understand what you mean (in context) but part of the 'difference' between those who make it and those who don't surely is that ability to 'do it', week in, week out - and shine as they do so. It's not enough to be good and show it every now and then in 5 or 10 min cameos. The disappointing thing is that very few have any consistency. It's a worry for Flanagan, etc.

Also, the pace in these games is something the players can address. I don't think many of them come off the pitch 'with nothing left'. By this I don't mean they should be headless chickens, rather that they should up their personal tempo, it can be sooooo slow sometimes. The Leeds team are a good example of what I mean. If anything they 'burned a little too brightly, and struggled in the last 10mins of each half but at least they were learning how to do the right things at the right pace. Too often we are in slow motion.

Kirby seems pretty consistent in terms of this side of things. Gio has impressed me of late and in his first 10-15 mins he looked good today I thought but then disappeared and his body language changed - did he have a fallout with one of our players?

Despite these concerns, I really enjoy watching the lads. I also realise that they are still learning their trade, just a bit worried that they are doing that at half speed sometimes.

Passing the ball sideways across the back gains nothing and frustrates fans as it does not clear the danger and it is far better to turn defence into attack by getting the ball and feeding it into midfield quickly like Sakho does for the Palace first team with good effect.

By not clearing the ball Palace allowed Blackburn to pin them back for long periods of sustained pressure by pressing up on the player on the ball forcing him to go sideways, backwards or put the ball out of play as there was no out ball available to him.
