I thought we just let them have the 3 points .. then realised they aren't that great and should have tried harder
Very frustrating with the negativity tactically

Surprised Hennessy has the most votes. In the first half he was slapping the ball all over the place though there were some decent saves in the second

Can I vote for the kid at half time who banged in his penalty then sprinted to the away fans and larged it up in front of them? Class!

Some decent attacking moments second half, and we would have scored twice but for two world class saves

First goal was a joke though, and ridiculously poor marking, leaving Jesus unmarked in the 6 yard box

Some very good performances, Wayne, and Kouyate in particular

Schlupp was awful and Wilf apparently disinterested for 80 odd minutes

Game could have been 8-2, they missed some ridiculously easy chances as well as those Wayne saved
Always an accurate assessment. Never stop posting

That happened against Norwich so sounds like a copy cat incident.

My only criticism of the game today was the team selection. Luka should have been left on the bench and Townsend should have started instead of Schlupp, and for tactical reasons I would have started Benteke to give their makeshift CBís something to deal with in the air.

I don't think we are allowed to see what their lineup is and if they have a makeshift defence or not before we name our team.

Certainly didnít embarrass ourselves and it was no chelsea at home performance but I sat there at the end thinking we may have missed a trick somewhat.

We were very passive and let them have way too much ball, although i accept they are so good this would perhaps happen anyway. We just didnít seem to impose ourselves on the game at all.

Thought the back 4 were good although Joel lost his man for their first. Have to say (being a big critic of him) that WH did ok. Made some smart saves but should have done much better with the second that went straight through him.

All in all ok

Given the gulf in class I think most of the team did as well as we could reasonably expect.
Schlupp, Luka and Wilf were well below what we needed if we were going to get anything out of the game.
Despite giving me kittens first 20 mins, Hennessey did well overall and great save from Jesus 2nd half.
We conceded 2 goals at the wrong time, 2nd was quality, 1st Tomkins seemed to pass responsibility over to Ward for Jesus and not sure why,but with City's quality of movement he might have been looking to cover something else. Hard to be too critical.

the top teams have sussed out that, with a high press, Luka can be exposed. He wants too much time on the ball and doesnt have the pace to retrieve it when he loses possession. Its happening more and more regularly

I mentioned this in the match day thread and having since watched motd I think Ward was left exposed for the first goal by Tomkins, who left Jesus open in order to cover a run by Silva, who in turn had not been tracked by Kouyate who allowed him to make an unhindered dummy run into the box

I think you mean he was positively impacting balls crossed into the box.

This was a very nice change to how he used to react to balls into the box (where he didn’t do anything). Perhaps he is learning from Guaita.

I think he is learning from Kiely as well. A marked improvement in WH since he joined, and VG has looked better too

Thereís really no analysis to be had other than all of the eleven and bench of Man City would walk into our team and it showed. £50m players in nearly every position, they were just too good for us.

Agree with that, Kiely seems to have brought an improvement in both

Of course VG is a better keeper, but the goalkeeping position had no impact on the result yesterday, for us at least.

Hennessey 7 Looked shaky but still effective, and then good saves

PVA 6 Fine defensively, didn't have much ball or support for forward runs
Cahill 6 Solid enough
Tomkins 6 Great to see him back. Did well
Ward 6 Thought he was pretty solid against good opposition

Miivojevic 5 Rusty and uninspiring.
McArthur 6 Does his usual amount of running. Limited footballer
Kouyate 6 Does his usual amount of running. Limited footballer

Schlupp 3 I don't know what to say, I really don't. Rabbit in headlights? I think he has very little idea where he should be on the pitch, and that's why he jogs about the pitch as he is uncertain where to position himself and when to close down. No intensity, and as a footballer he's limited in ability. He's an athlete with power and pace who doesn't put in a shift! I mean, you couldn't make it up. He gives the ball away and is a passenger. He lasted 55 minutes under Hodgson. That's like being hooked before half time by a normal manager. Dreadful performance and should be dropped. He should contrast his levels of endeavour with that of Ayew, McArthur and Kouyate and be ashamed of himself.

Ayew 6 Put in a shift without really looking threatening. I don't think he's a striker, but he gives 100% and he has some technical ability. Very useful squad player.

Zaha 5 I thought he was poor by his standards, and no-one will be in for him with that level of performance. Tracking back, he was almost permanently in the full back positions but that's not what he's about. Lost out to Fernandinho in a chase because he had already had to run 50 yards from right back to get to that position. By being so deep it allowed Man City to camp all their outfield players in our half. Definite pen on De Bruyne. We are not getting the most out of him. This match was like an away game, and I'd like to see Wilf further up the pitch and more on the left when there's so much space in behind the opposition. One good strike late on.

Subs

Townsend 6 Bright, with decent technical ability, although predictable in needing to cut back onto the left every time. Having said that he can actually play, and should be starting when you look at the technical ability of the current XI.

Benteke 7 MOM - for the haters Almost scored with his first touch, with an excellent powerful header. I said he should have started the game, and even more after seeing the Man City teamsheet with no centre backs. Not saying we would have won but we let them off the hook in terms of at least having a contest. The only decent cross that came in whilst he was on the pitch from PVA's corner and we are nearly back in the game.

It was a solid performance, but Hodgson's teams are so boring to watch. There's not much in the way of footballing ability or pace and skill in this Palace side. Just Zaha and he will be gone soon. Maybe it's just me, but I don't enjoy it as much at Selhurst anymore. Still think Hodgson should just about get another season after this one, unless the right manager to take us forward becomes available, but it's not exactly an exciting prospect to have Roy at the helm for another year. Having said that, very proud to have him as our manager - nice guy with good morals. And he's bloody effective at what he does: our team is drilled and organised better than most.

Very good, Wayne, PVA, Kouyate

Good, Cahill, Tomkins, Ward, Luka, Ayew

Poor, JMac, Schlupp, Wilf

Thought that was JMacs worst game for a long time, 100% effort but he dawdled on the ball far too much and lost it repeatedly

Schlupp was abysmal

Wilf was also really poor, giving Joel little protection, and constantly picking fights with the ref and opposition players, for very little. He repeatedly let Mendy run off him and just didn't bother tracking him back. Watch the second goal, where he makes literally no effort to get back from our attack and support

I mentioned before, it wasn't only that City had better players, they worked far harder without the ball than we did, refusing us any space or time on the ball. The Silvas in particular were fantastic, as was Sterling, despite his multiple misses. Then Eder showed why he plays for Man City, two incredible saves

At least we didn't get slaughtered, but we weren't far from it, terrible finishing and a good game from Wayne meant the score line ended up being respectable

Ward 5 struggled against Sterling, no protection by Wilf
Cahill 6 tough game against a good team but best of our defenders
Tomkins 5 not ideal as a first game back after 6 months out but did OK
PVA 6 Did pretty well in difficult circumstances
Jim Mac 9 Everywhere, must have covered a marathon, good in the tackle held onto the ball and passed well.MOM
Kouyate 7 Worked so hard, didn't track his man for the first goal which caused the problem and never looks like scoring but breaks up play
Luka 6 booked early and struggled the rest of the game
Schlupp 4 poor game, lost the ball too easily and poor distribution
Zaha 3 would have been a 2 if he hadn't had a decent shot at the end, otherwise appalling in every aspect of his game
Ayew 7 really tough game for him but held the ball up well and tried to relieve the pressure

Townsend 7 did well when he came on, put Wilf to shame with his work-rate
Benteke 7.5 not a fan but did really well when he came on, maybe give him a go and drop Wilf for Arsenal away
