Newshopper Report from Saturday

Goldberg has the Midas touch as Grays tumble
By Tim Ashton

Goalscrorer Lloyd Blackman
Grays Athletic 1 v 2 Bromley
FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying

BROMLEY pulled off one of the shocks of the FA Cup, beating Grays Athletic of the Nationwide Conference, writes Tim Ashton.
The weekend before, Grays slammed six past St Albans but defeat at home to Mark Goldberg's heroes saw manager Frank Gray sacked.

A first-half brace from Lloyd Blackman was enough to beat the team currently lying ninth in the fifth echelon of English football and it set up a mouth watering tie at Kent neighbours Gillingham of League One.

Goldberg said: "We are delighted with the result and our performance. It is fair to say we deserved to win and we always looked dangerous when we attacked.

"After the first 20 minutes we settled down well and defended resolutely." He added: "We were confident as we had prepared extremely well, studying the opposition and setting out our game plan.

"We wanted to go out there with a very positive approach and make sure we broke away quickly, exploited the channels and got the ball to our front players early but not just by booting it to them, rather playing it to feet, and it worked well."

Eyebrows had been raised when Blackman was preferred up front to last weekend's hat-trick hero Gareth Williams.

Goldberg said: "We wanted to start with a 3-5-2 formation and making it work relies on a lot of movement from the front players and Lloyd Blackman is an expert at his movement off the ball as well as on.

"It is the movement which creates spaces and also scares the opposition and for me, on the day, Lloyd's activity off the ball was going to cause a lot of problems and it did.

"As it happened his activity on the ball did pretty well as well."

Full-timers Grays Athletic put Bromley under pressure from the kick-off, moving the ball round quickly and pushing the visitors back, match report by Patrick Harris.

Glenn Poole and Dennis Oli both fired wide in the early stages but with their first attack on 11 minutes, the Lillywhites took the lead.

Mark Corneille's hard work set up Blackman, who turned sharply and smashed the ball past Ashley Bayes.

Grays continued to have all the possession and pressure with Michael Knightly's free-kick hitting the post.

On a rare break, Sam Wood's shot was cleared off the line and Blackman's effort was saved but a sustained spell of pressure from the hosts paid off when a low cross from the right was turned in by Lee Boylan.

But on 38 minutes, Bromley sent their fans crazy when Blackman latched on to a ball from the left and beat Bayes from 12 yards.

Bromley started the second half strongly with Francis Duku heading wide from a corner, Nic McDonnell seeing his shot turned over and Blackman's effort being saved.

Grays rallied with Jamie Slabber shooting wide twice. However, they could not get the equaliser.

For his two-goal show, Blackman has been nominated for the FA Cup player of the round - show your support for the sharp-shooter at thefa.com

MATCH FACTS: BROMLEY: Walker, Corneille, Wood, O'Sullivan (Osborn, 33), Henriques, Duku, Adeniyi, Moore (Bowry, 73), Blackman (Williams, 73), McDonnell, K Watts.

MARK Goldberg believes Bromley's reward for their stunning FA Cup triumph at Grays last Saturday was almost as good as it could get.

The Ryman Premier leaders stunned their Conference opponents with a 2-1 victory to set up a Kent derby at League One outfit Gillingham.

"I heard the draw in the dressing room and was extremely pleased with the news," revealed the manager. "Apart from getting Nottingham Forest away, it is pretty much the next best outcome we could have hoped for.

"I know Paul Scally quite well and it will be a great day for everyone associated with Bromley Football Club."

Goldberg's side already have a psychological advantage over the Gills having beaten them 1-0 in a pre-season encounter at Hayes Lane.

"They had eight of their first-team squad playing that day, so we certainly have some idea of what they are capable of.

"We've already started our preparations for the game and will be doing plenty of in-depth homework between now and next Saturday,"

The trip to Priestfield will be Bromley's biggest game in 30 years since they visited Swindon Town at the same stage of the competition.

"I believe the team we have got here are capable of playing in big games and we will go there with nothing to fear," added Goldberg.

There was certainly no evidence of an inferiority complex when the Lillywhites went to Essex last weekend to play full-timers Grays.

The boss continued: "I thought the performance itself was every bit as impressive as the result, if not better. We settled down after the opening 20 minutes and began to knock the ball around.

"We always looked dangerous going forward and other from set plays, I don't think they ever caused us any real problems.

"They didn't create any clear cut chances and if you had been watching, you wouldn't have been able to tell which was the Ryman side and which was in the Conference."

Attention now turns to this Saturday's FA Trophy game at Tooting & Mitcham - a side not only managed by Goldberg's predecessors George Wakeling and Billy Smith, but also one containing several ex-Bromley players.

Donal O'Sullivan (groin), Tony Boot (thigh) and Mark Corneille (hamstring) are all rated as doubtful for the Tooting clash.

Gareth Williams is currently on trial at Torquay United and will discover on Friday if he will be offered a full-time deal with the League Two club. If not, he will be available for Bromley on Saturday.
