Poor Colin

Absolutely disgusting service at Schiphol airport. 55 minutes we have been stood in the immigration queue. This isn’t the Brexit I voted for. pic.twitter.com/QcSne9d4qW

Colin wouldn’t give a shit if people who voted remain had to queue, like most Brexiters the damage he’s done only matters when it affects him.

This is the kind of uninformed opinion that annoys me.

The UK leaving the EU was never the end, since the UK still follows EU law and therefore still has unfettered access to the single market. Any attempt to change this status quo will change the agreement, and therefore affect access. Any change under international trading rules and standards results in paperwork, checks, and tariffs, which therefore means delays. An example of this is Switzerland which is not part of it, where checks occur.

Currently, the UK follows EU law without question under the withdrawal agreement via the transition period. The EU grants the UK access as long as the UK keeps EU rules, until at least the end of the year. These rules are made by the EU and the UK no longer has vetoes nor influence over their implementation. For example, the other day the EU parliament voted to force the UK to increase HGV Vehicle Excise Duty. The UK government back in 2012(?) were forced to increase the HGV levy on UK registered HGVs, so decided to reduce VED by the same difference, meaning UK registered HGVs had an unfair advantage over other registered HGVs. Without the UK's veto, this was passed and now UK law has changed without the UK having a say.

Now, you're probably thinking "well that seems totally unfair, them dictating to us about our country". Well, it is, completely. This is the state the UK is now in, and there are three ways to go:

1. Break away from EU rules, and UK law becomes paramount. Sounds reasonable enough, but this would mean the UK loses unfettered access to the single market, issues for fisheries, and the Irish border. It would also mean those issues that some have dismissed as "Project Fear" like Operation Yellowhammer would become real due to the EU enforcing protection on the Single Market. You might argue that would hinder the EU too so they won't do that, but to not do that would threaten the entire integrity of it with larger consequences. So in effect the EU will have to call the UK's bluff. This ultimately means everyone loses, it's just a question of who will be the biggest loser. And it'll probably be the UK because it's smaller. This, as described by the Government's own reports, could lead to a 10% loss in GDP, which is more than the 2008 recession caused for comparison's sake. There would also be questions regarding food security, medicine security, and energy security. Now I'm aware of the argument that "we'll just trade with other people to keep the supply going" but the UK trade is largely based on trade deals negotiated via the EU which expire at the end of the year. This increases costs and checks, plus a lot of our imports enter via the EU first.

This option is basically "beware of the consequences of your actions".

2. The UK does a deal of some kind (EFTA or whatever). It stays as it is now, with access to the single market and alignment on most things. It has hardly any free trade deals of its own initially, and when negotiated they're naturally worse deals than it had as part of the EU due to logic. This means short to medium term increases in prices due to tariffs, and possible uncertainty which leads to an initial lack of investment. Whilst the UK would recover slowly, you'd face economic stagnation and recession on an economy still incorporating austerity measures. It would guarantee supply, so there's that.

This option is basically "permanent diminished state of limbo".

and 3. The UK comes back to the EU and seeks to rejoin. It's a painful process being diplomatic and some nations are tired of the UK's sh*t. The UK doesn't get what it wants, has to back down on things it previously had like the fishing convention, Schengen and the Euro. The UK is tamed.

This option is basically "Schadenfreude".

------------------------

So, in conclusion, why the f*ck did the UK leave when left with these sh*t options?!

And it will affect him, and all the other oldies who voted that way. I already told my mum in 2021 I'll send her texts while she's abroad so she can see the bill for them

So the Leave article in the guardian saying that there would be an extra 1 hour delay at customs was a lie, it is only 55 minutes, project fear!

Colin should believe in Brexit more and rush the barriers and see what happens.

Remainers will continue to blame economic (and other) problems on Brexit.
Brexiteers will continue to deny this.

All so dull.

So what? He would have been in the same queue as normal. Nothing's changed yet. Don't get me wrong it will and the queues will be longer but stop making out it's now happening because of Brexit. At least wait for it to actually happen before slating it!

It does happen, actually. Same with receiving calls. Depends on the provider and contract/PAYG.
