We all like to see young players make the first team but surely the reason it's not happening at the moment is because they aren't good enough. It is OK saying give them a chance but it it is obvious they are so far off the level then there is no point. Many people were wanting Jake Gray to get a game yet he has gone to a league two club. that is a massive difference in level.
I hope Dreher makes it and i hope he plays for us this season but the reality is that we don't have a Rashford at the club and until we can invest massively in infrastructure and get the youth teams playing at the top level it is unlikely to change. |

Great to see Dreher being fast-tracked through to the fringe of the first team. Sends good signals to all the youth and Academy boys and must be a boost to the coaches.
Woosie, doe this mean Boating is likely to be heading for another loan ?

It maybe something to do with Taylor had blown the clubs money on utter pony and Warnock had to sell before he could buy anyone so had no other choice.

In the same round of the Carling Cup last year. The closest we came to blooding an academy graduate was starting Wilfred zaha. Kaikai sat on the bench for the entire match. |

Yeah I think Boateng (and possibly Dreher too) will go out on loan

The cpfc.co.uk site says U21 match, and all the players seem to be U21s. If it was a U23 match, why have they changed from the regular U21?

Cos the whole league structure is now U23. I think theory is that U21 league was too far away from 1st team standard and by having older players involved by making it U23s the gap will close.
It's only going back to way things used to be in that International football was 1st teams and U23s (as it was when Selhurst hosted a couple of England U23 internationals in which our own Peter Taylor played). |

I see. Well there is still the 25-man squad rule for the league, with u21s free to play even if they are not in the squad. So probably teams won't have a lot of extra 22-23 year olds.

It is the U23s, any team playing a "Development" squad - I guess technically this is the most accurate term as it is a Professional Development league - will be allowed to use players aged 23 or under without them counting towards the three (+ goalkeeper) overage player limit. They changed it for the Cat 1 teams and made a big fuss about it, but didn't bother explaining what it meant for anyone else.

Does that include people born in 1993 and after? For Palace that would be Ladapo, Joniesta and Wickham and all the U21 guys. Fryers and Wilf were born in the autumn of 92, and are about to turn 24. In the squad of 25 rule, it's the year they were born, and this year is the last year those born in 1995 are free to play in the league without being named in the squad.

To view the link you have to Register or Login - I think they must have just updated an original article as the date is July 2015...
"As with Premier League 2, clubs are only allowed to field three outfield players over the age of 23, or born after 1 January 1993, plus the goalkeeper is also permitted to be over the age limit." Re Luke Dreher, he can be seen training with the first team in the piece the club did showing Benteke this morning. Luke Croll was there too. Would say it's a decent bet that they will both be on the bench.

Might give a couple of years extra in the academy for some of the fairly strong 95 generation. Although it won't help them in the first team if they are left out of the squad of 25 from next season. Can't see Palace having anyone signed that was born in 94 at the moment. This will be the last season Ladapo, Joniesta and Wickham get a free spot in the development team if the manager wants them to play there.
Great news about Dreher. Really hope we see him in the first team tomorrow.
