UK citizenship advice

Is there anyone here with knowledge on this? My son ( 17) is applying for citizenship. Info being given is contractictory as you go along the process and leaving leaving me confused. Almost impossible to speak to a human. Thanks in advance.

My wife had to jump through numerous hoops just to get a marriage visa. I don't have any advice but I just wish him luck with the process. It's so much more stressful than it needs to be.

The info is so poor. I am a citizen obviously but his mum is Danish and he was born out of wedlock, which amazingly makes a difference. The info on the conditions needed for referees changed after we had submitted them electronically which could render them redundant. Not only that, the last line on the referees written form ( which we only see after submission ) states wrongful info submitted can lead to a prison term. It would have been nice to let my friends know that before i asked them.

I got UK passports for my twin boys about 5 years ago. They were born in the US. I just followed the directions on the passport service website. It was a very smooth process as far as I can remember.

I got the information package from the UK about 25 years ago for my wife when we were thinking about moving back.

Didn't look too bad at the time, but like you say Golf Boy... your Son's circumstances maybe different, and 25 years is a long time.

Maybe you need to move to Hong Kong first...

Did you need two referees for each application? First it said they had to be uk citizens but now says one of them should have had a professional relationship with my son. To fulfill both conditions would be impossible. Still not found a human to interact with.

Pressed the right buttons on the immigration helpline given and got an email address. Whipped an email off and got an automated reply from the Coronavirus immigration helpline!! At no point was corona mentioned among the options.

Having gone through the process again i can see the bit about corona. It randomly jumped to a bunch of options about Corona which i have to sit and listen to before wanting my credit card number, but stressed they can’t give case specific info - well that is precisely what is required! FFS

No, just one countersignatory. The actual text on the explanatory form for the application (at the time) was:

Information for the Countersignatory

Thank you for agreeing to act as a countersignatory for a passport application. As a countersignatory, there are three things you need to do:

1) Confirm the applicant’s identity: You must confirm that the information provided by the applicant as part of the application number is true. The application summary shows the information that has been provided to us, please read it. You must also confirm that you have known the adult submitting the application for this child for at least two years and that they have parental responsibility for the child.

2) Certify a photograph: You must confirm that the photograph being submitted with the application is a true likeness of the child in question. You do this by writing the following on the back of one photograph only: I certify that this is a true likeness of [Mr, Mrs, Miss, Ms or other title followed by full name] …

3) Complete the countersignature section: When you have completed these steps, please fill in and sign the countersignature section. Put your initials next to any mistakes you make.

This had to be a professional person (banker, police officer, minister, teacher, etc.), unrelated to the applicant, have (and provide photocopy of) UK, Irish, EU, or US passport.

That pretty much sounds like it was 50 years ago when applying for a passport.

Your kids get citizenship automatically, Thats assuming your UK born and bred. Don't remember how you apply for the passport but 2 of my 4 kids wanted one. The other two haven't shown any interest yet. My son may well be marrying his Aus born girlfriend and Italian Passport holder here, so he may go down the Euro track. Although I think that means he has to live and apply in Italy.

I don't have one anymore on account that my wife of 40 years complete with NI number and UK nursing experience isn't entitled to one. Right of abode yes.. Auto Passport no. Not sure how the legalise works so my kids can automatically qualify and my wife not. A Mother of UK passport holders and wife of a British citizen isn't automatically eligible for a UK passport. HTF does that work?

Believe it or not, It looks like she qualifies for some UK pension.... More on that later. We are going through an enquiry stage.

They are doing my ******* head in here. After some googling it seems it was a mistake to read the guidelines before applying as they are incorrect, but we've already sent the application in. I now want to find out what the right course of action is but there is no one to talk to, other than a line which i had to give my credit card number before being put through ( which i don't like doing ) only for it to ring for 5 minutes without anyone answering. i don't even know if i was getting charged for them not helping one bit.

What happened to ringing to a department and being put through to someone who can help. *****.

My wife is seeking UK citizenship. The associated explanatory literature and forms are complicated to the point of being deliberately misleading so we appointed a specialist lawyer

If your son is entitled to the UK passport that may be different and was not a problem for our son some 20 odd years ago in Jamaica

This has been a requirement for several years, if it is your first passport and if you are over a certain age 16 or 18 I believe but that may not be correct
