We've also done the minimum to take the creative load off Zaha ( another obvious mistake over the last seven years ) and it turned out ( big surprise ) that Benteke couldn't solve a supply problem all by himself. The club did almost nothing to improve supply except enjoy Wilf's evolution into a one-man team. Now Zaha is showing signs of being either so unsettled or so disinterested in risking a potential injury that he is currently failing to do for us what he did last season.

We should have never brought Benteke and should have invested in creativity. Instead we hyper-paid him to fail to score and hyper-paid one player, in Zaha, to stay here and be our talisman, making us so dependent on his contribution that we can't afford to lose him for any less than what others refuse to pay. I've never believed in holding onto players. It rarely works out and is a massive risk. Had we done what we should always been doing since 2013 -and improved creativity in the middle and changed our footballing culture with actions beyond bringing in managers who we didn't back with the right players and then fired after five matches -then we could have had the ability to countenance letting Zaha go this window, for a figure of say £60M, and reinvested that money into a team that didn't have such a massive creative hole and a system of creating goals that fails to go beyond the admittedly solid but uninspiring regimentation under Roy.

The summer we brought Benteke led us to much of the FFP issues we have now and struggles to fund a proper replacement. The refusal to invest seriously in a CAM meant we are still wing-dependent and Wilf-dependent. It is still a big if that we will go down but, should that happen, the issue was not really that our scouting system was so poor, per se, or that we spent universally poorly. It was that we pumped huge amounts of money into every part of the team except creativity from the middle. The financial issues and dependency on a single player for survival comes from our failure as a club culture, something I have always maintained would be our downfall unless addressed. I thought FDB would be that moment.

I believe that, should we go down -the three things that did it were buying Benteke and chucking away two good finishers, not backing FDB in terms of money or time when a cultural change seemed possible and our determination to leave the midfield as little more than water-carriers for a pair of wingers. We are essentially the same club that came up in 2013, albeit with better players and a crippling wage bill. The fact that we are STILL the same club is a prime reason why another season of struggle and uncertainty likely lies ahead.
Absolutely spot on, an excellent analysis as to how we've stood still.

I recall seeing him play for Villa, take the ball on about the half-way line, run through the defence and score, with no help from anyone. It would be lovely to see him do that now. He was a magnificent player then. He is still good, but for that old instinctive goalscoring drive he had, and which left him.

Decent balls over the top for him too, diagonal passes...we just dont do that. We are too slow and ponderous.

We are now, but when we had Zaha and Bolasie running the wings it was a different story, sigh.

The day he receives 20 decent crosses that are goal scoring chances and he misses them all, i will call him sh1t.

There was one relatively low cross Ward put in against Sheffield United where CB was literally running backwards to get away from it.

I don't think we actually crossed the halfway line much at all at Bramall Lane. We're far too busy telegraphing slow ponderous passes around the back four.

That was the second half. First half we had some decent openings mostly on the break, most which were stopped either by Wilf running into defenders or Townsend getting in someone's way.

I think watching the second half was so excruciating painful I forgot the first half was just as dull as dishwater. Amazingly little entertainment for a match with players earning thousands a week.

Roy doesnt play wingers ,the widemen and midfielders are all defensive minded in this dull system. Meyer Camarasa zaha and Townsend would thrive in a more attack minded system.

But that's no excuse for benteke he's just shite full stop

To be far to him he did do that against Everton. Put in a lovely ball for Ayew and then Pickford went and saved it. It wasn't even a terrible strike just not good enough.

I don't think it's a dull system at all with the right players in it ie Cabaye and RLC it produced some breathtaking football at the back end of the 2017-2018 season. However as per normal the club hierarchies attitude to transfers and having the right combination of players has ****ed us.

I'm praying some combo of McCarthy, Camarasa and Max can now put back in all of the creativity (but crucially still had some bite and the abilty to cut out opp attacks) that we decided wasn't important that summer.....

We do actually have two players for every position now I just hope Victor and McCarthy are the RLC and Cabaye replacements that we need because our midfield is total dogshit right now.

As Pardew Brought Benteke in, maybe he can tell RH what he is doing wrong tactically that has caused CB's goal drought. It seems as though Hodgson's coaching team don't coach any forward play, because there would appear to be no understanding between the players up front.
