I would have thought any new investment plan is now on hold until we can guarantee Prem survival. This dire run is damaging to the club at all levels, despite AP's apparent insouciance.

We'll have to agree to disagree. The dad thought the things academy lads learned on trips like this were huge in the lads long term development whether or not they became professionals. A lot of south london kids lack respect, time keeping, general discipline etc. And that's before experience or other cultures and foreign travel. Trips like this develop life skills.

In any event, would the boys' schools have allowed them to miss a month of education if there weren't contingencies in place? I really doubt it.

A quick search reveals that the word 'insouciance' has been used 24 times on the BBS (although one looks like a double post or quote), and the last time was in 2014

I agree fully with you re benefits of non football development. Thought you just meant football stuff originally which will not be relevant long term to a lot of the lads.
Know exactly where you are coming from as teacher mate of mine was amazed when took class from his inner city London school to Norfolk and at how uncomfortable a lot of them were in a different environment as so many had rarely been outside of London for overnight periods!

Jason Akiotu playing for Leicester U21s tonight could indicate he's not signing his pro deal.

Does that mean that we have given permission for him to play for them on trial? Not a player I can remember seeing much of so far but assume if we have offered a contract he has good potential?

He's got a scholarship contract so yes, I think it does mean that.

He's a decent player, has potential and could improve in the coming years. (18 next month)

I can't see how it could make us any worse than the crap that's been served up in the first half of the last three league games or more. Yesterday we should have started with Bolasie and had Kaikai to bring on when Bolasie started to fade (or the other way around).

I really have to question if Pardew will ever give him a chance as he hasn't given it in this period where we have had two of our three main wide men injured (one of whom is still to prove himself at this level) and have been crying out for another winger; for me it sends the wrong message to the team, the youngsters, the owners and the supporters.

At the end of the day, if he had been brought into the team and played a blinder, proving he is ready then that is a multi-million pound signing which doesn't need to be made at some point down the line meaning we could spend it on a position where we don't have a talented youngster eagerly waiting in the wings.

In a week and just two games this Rashford guy at United has probably trebled his value and made himself undroppable for the next few games, that's the gamble of giving youth a chance and I'd say that when you are already losing and nothing else seems to be working then it is a gamble which is worth taking.

Agree with all this post.

Think he has signed a pro deal?

Also Kaikai scored again last night.

If Pardew not going to give Kaikai a chance next season then i'd rather we find a manager who will.

Would he and Boateng be 21 when we nme the 25??

Pardew did say that Kaikai will be a big player for us next season. I just hope he keeps to his word.

A lot of managers talk about developing and playing the youth but the proof is in the pudding. Fair enough if they are simply not up to it but when we are playing the likes of Frazier Campbell, that argument begins to have less credibility. Yes every game is important but surely the same holds true for Man Utd or Southampton who seem to manage to give their youngsters game time.

Without being unkind it's an issue of quality. I don't think you can compare :

Chambers, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Bale, Shaw, Prowse, etc etc
or the Manu equivalents with
Kai-Kai or Boateng (who are probably the best of our youngsters with Gray just behind them).

It's not an issue of not trying them, it's an issue of big being able to. I don't mean they don't have a chance of making it ever, more that they haven't been good enough to promote up until now as they mature. Clyne was good enough, Wilf was, but sadly Williams wasn't (possibly/probably due to injury).

I am all for giving youth a chance but they have to be good enough to earn a place or we risk damaging them.

No, he has only been offered a pro deal. He has not signed it.

Kaikai and Boateng have another year before they need to be named in the 25 man squad I believe.

They have to be good enough to be given a chance to earn a place, otherwise they'll never, ever be good enough.

See To view the link you have to Register or Loginpost for a far more detailed analysis on when a player is "ready".

Let's not forget that before Warnock, Clyne was not considered 'the next big thing'. And Zaha was not far away from being released. Of course a player has to show promise to get a chance, but like someone has said above, is playing an absolute donkey like Campbell really a better option than trying out a half decent youngster who may surprise us all?

How do you know they arent good enough? It's just your assumption. Not playing them is a greater risk and sooner or later there is only one way to find out. Did Boateng think the Swansea game damaged him?

Can you name the multiple Man Utd players they van given debuts to? Also your naming ex Saints apart from Ward Prowse ; there are half a dozen current players you have'nt named that are not so famous - Are you saying that only talent comes through them? We are talking about two players who deserve a chance
