But, as far as tackling knife crime goes, surely magistrates and judges already have the means at their disposal? It is high time to start imposing meaningful penalties for possession and use. Too often it seems the penalties are minimal, even just a slap on the wrist. Bound over/warnings/curfews etc just don't serve the purpose; they are worn as a 'I got away with it' badge of honour. Time to start using the powers they have?

A question. Are courts bound by previous precedent when sentencing? Surely someone somewhere has to be the first to make a stand and impose much more severe penalties? Minimal sentences just don't work.

I’d be interested to know where you get the impression you have.

There are statutory prison sentences in place for knife possession. The judiciary can’t go behind those and give this alleged ‘slap on the wrist ‘.

Simply from news stories - plenty of them. Slap on the wrist was perhaps a little unfair, but I'm sure they have the powers and could implement tougher penalties than they sometimes do. Stiffer penalties would send out a stronger message.

My point was, why do the judiciary not use their powers to full more often? Is a first offence of carrying a knife deemed less punishable. I don't scour news reports on a daily basis and keep detailed logs. I can't be bothered trawling t'internet for specific stories, but I am surely not the only one hearing/reading news reports thinking; "How did they get off that lightly?" If they used their powers to the full more often, prisons would be bursting at the seams.

Are all these in prison?

I don't normally bother with the Politics thread. Now I know why. I am giving it a wide berth, like I knew I should have.

So listening to the Police just now on 5 live they point towards massive population growth and pressures with anti - terrorism, the latter of course connected to Labourís illegal oversea wars.

So to blame austerity (otherwise know as living within your means) is an easy and simple cop-out. Off course there is a BBS mob who would blame austerity on Palace loosing at Watford yesterday if the could, but scratch away the veneer and those of us old enough recall the alarming rise in knife crime in Croydon even under Blair.

So called austerity is a blunt tool of an ideological argument.

I have no idea why being asked to explain what you mean has disturbed you so much. You say people are being let off; I ask for specific examples of what you mean (because the judiciary have little discretion on the matter since prison sentences are statutory) and you post more general stuff and then flounce.

I mean, whatís that about?

Don't forget Cameron's inspired wiping out of Gadaffi. Probably caused the current refugee crisis (alongside Syria) more than Iraq.

Not sure you can pin right-wing terrorism to Blair and Bush really - and don't forget 9-11 was before Iraq. In fact, cutting the funding to the police after 2010 (austerity, in fact) stopped them dealing with any of the factors you mention anyway, so your argument collapses pretty quickly under any scrutiny.

Every knife sold in the UK should have a gps tracker fitted in the handle. Itís time we had a national database like we do with guns. If youíre carrying it around you had better have a bloody good explanation, obvious exemptions for fishing etc.

Got some great responses like someone posting a picture with a knife strapped to an iPad.

Mr Mann admitted later that, ĎIt probably was a bit of a s*** idea but, ultimately, we have a problem and no one's coming up with any solutions.í
Like replacing the handle isn't an option? What a f*cking twonk. Or using an axe.

But i suppose with a rise in population there should be a calculated rise in police too so maybe thrre is a connection.
The high birthrates amongst people in so called 'poverty' will continue to cause this country many issues for years to come.

Poverty causes trouble. Birth rate only does if it falls away to not many.

I agree with you on The Cameron war, and all factors that contribute. The point Iím making is that the Ďburn the witch brigadeí where all ills in the world automatically point to The Conservative party is faintly hysterical.

As to my argument - well itís not, it was the Police argument, or one view on one radio program which made sense to me. As to it being under scrutiny well again you are wrong, this is not a court or law, so no scrutiny, it is a chat forum for a bunch of football blokes, alas stolen in recent years by lefty bullies with to much time on their hands.

Or simply posts that give arguments for which you have no reasoned reply?
