I think we should change our name to Wolves, wear Orange shirts, and claim Derek Dougan as one of our own.
Makes as much sense.

I wonder if we can re-sign Cuthbert Ottaway?

Cuthbert Ottaway played principally as a centre forward in the seven- and eight-man attacks in vogue during the early 1870s, and was described as "an excellent forward, being fast and very skilful in piloting the ball". As a striker, another contemporary appreciation noted, "he can certainly hold his own against all rivals";[15] he was "an elegant dribbler and plays well."[15] It would appear that the player depended more heavily on skill and control than most footballers of his period; at a time when play of the most robust sort - including body-checking and "hacking" - was in vogue, Ottaway was praised for his grace. "His beautiful science," another report observed, "exhibited how a ball ought to be taken through a host of foes."

Everybody assumes that Accrington Stanley are the same team that was wound up in the 60's but technically, there's no direct link between the 2 organisations.

Exactly the same could be said for the teams currently playing as Newport County, Aldershot Town, Maidstone United and Bradford Park Avenue. They all ceased to exist for several years and were restarted with the same name playing in roughly the same location. Their fans all consider them the same as far as I'm aware. What's the difference?

We're clearly the same team. Perhaps not the same company but it's the same name, same location and presumably (although there wouldn't have been very many of them) the same fans. If Palace had been wound up last Summer and some fans had recreated a club with the same name at the bottom of the League Pyramid then virtually all of us would have assumed it to be the same club. It's exactly the same. I think it's fair to assume that we're the same club, allbeit with a 30 year hiatus.

I think that the difference is that, with all the clubs that you mention, the new club was started deliberately to replace the old one. In Palace's case the new club was formed in 1905 to take advantage of the stadium that had been created a few years before and which was under-used. I have never seen any quotes from Sidney Bourne or Edmund Goodman, the founders of the present club, to say that they were even aware of the previous one. In fact I don't think anyone knows for certain where the 1861 club actually played their matches.

It's a pity - I would really like us to claim to be the oldest league club - but there it is.

It was over 40 years between Accrington Stanley being wound up and their current incarnation regaining League status. Personally, I consider it to be the same team. Obviously, it's not the same business, organization, club ... call it what you want. But it's the same team. I fear that many people's attitude on the subject is indicative of how football is more of a business than a sport nowadays.

"Oh, but they don't have the same VAT code and weren't registered at Company's House with the same board of ... " . Football supporters are becoming more like accountants and less like fans every day.

They were called Crystal Palace. They played at Crystal Palace. They were Crystal Palace.

The new Accrington Stanley was set up about 18 months to 2 years after the demise of the old one - same fans and is a continuation of the old one and was intended to be so when it was set up and I think it is the same team as well - that isn't the case with CP.

To be honest I am with Elwiss here

We now have CPFC2010
Had 2000 Ltd
The one before that 1985?

All different companies, (with a year in the bracket), one football club.

Accrington Stanley is still the same football club, with a different Ltd company name, why can't Crystal Palace FC be?

Shame it wasn't 1860, then we could have had a '1860 Palace' re-brand
