I'm intrigued, Steve. What do you define as a 'problem drinker' and when you say you were on the cusp, in what way? Do you mean the volume, regularity or something else?

(When (unwisely - but we all did it then) applying for an endowment mortgage in the 1990s, the provider was so concerned about the number of units I said I drank on my medical form, they sent a nurse to evaluate me ...)

I have definitely enjoyed the detox health benefits of drinking much less during lockdown, but not enough to do so permanently when socialising can begin again.
At the considerable risk of sounding judgemental - for which I apologise - getting as far as a mortgage company sending a nurse to evaluate you sounds 'problem' level to me...

Volume and regularity, I guess. I've not really defined it, and certainly wouldn't want to for anyone else (other than Richard, obviously).

I would admire what you have done more...or someone doing a dry Febriary...for example....not so easy when that pay cheque has entered the bank account..

I think the real "problem" was that I answered the questions on the form honestly, whereas most take a somewhat "optimistic" calculation of their weekly units intake. I certainly felt I was drinking no more than any other reasonably-sociable twenty-something - albeit that I seemed to have quite a lot of stamina to last late into the nights ... and the City in those days also had quite a strong lunchtime drinking culture. Anyway, I passed all the tests the nurse made me do !

And please don't apologise for being judgemental - we are well-used to you by now !!

I assumed you put a high figure so that they would send a young nurse around.

I'm intrigued as to what tests the nurse made you do. (I am sure you are right about the level of honesty in answers to 'how many units do you drink?')

To be fair, I think I've only mentioned it on relevant threads (ie this and the beer one).

I'm not sure what the guidelines were in the days of yore that Dickie is talking about, but nowadays the NHS say there is no such thing as a safe amount of booze allowed, a man is allowed a maximum of 14 units if he insists on despoiling his body. That's about one and a half bottles of wine which sounds like not very much to me.

I'm sure that in the old days it was 28 units, then 21 and now 14.

I can't really remember (perhaps I was pished ...), but think it was a fairly bog standard medical - blood pressure, reactions (that funny hammer they hit your knee with), bloodshot eyes, colour of nose, breath etc. ....

I do remember telling them that I was too busy at work to visit a clinic, so they sent the nurse around, who did all the tests in a client meeting room at lunchtime.

Anyway, she gave me a clean bill of health, and I lasted for the lifetime of the policy which paid out a few years ago ... short of its predicted value, the b@stards ...

Even in the old days, that was 14 pints a week - which, if you were having a few on two or three lunchtimes, and five or six evenings, a week is impossible to live to.

So now we are in February your uncorked anger seemed to have spoiled to a vinegary bitterness.

For a man who is both social and quite accepting of a wide range of behaviours and cultures, I am genuinely at a loss to know what has triggered you so.

I wonder if the clue lies in the word effort. Why does it require effort to not do a thing?

Are you still in the drink? Or do your various ailments and afflictions preclude it these days?
