My aim is to knock on the head the Friday drinks night leaving just Saturday and Sunday to enjoy a few. I don't like drinking beer 'with' dinner but then wine goes so well with meals but I drink it like it's beer as I drink quite quickly.
I now limit myself to one per night, although many nights I don't bother.

If I didn't have a shit load of beer at home it'd be a lot easier

My technique for not eating crisps, peanuts, biscuits etc is to just not have them in my flat and to go shopping after i have eaten.

Not boozing does have one down side for me (well it has more than one actually but..) in that I will usually have a cup of tea after my dinner which will very often be accompanied with a biscuit or some chocolate of some sort. I don’t have a sweet tooth at all and if I’d have had a beer or 2 and a glass of wine I would not even contemplate having a cup of tea and therefore neither the biscuits or chocolate.

Anyway, slightly different version of the Virgin Mary tonight. Quite nice. That’s 3 litre cartons of Tom Juice and half a large bottle of L&P done since NY. Probably more calories than beer. 6 out of the last 9 days dry, which is good for me. Planning to try and do 20 dry days in Jan which maybe tricky given I’m at a conference for 2 nights next week and a funeral next Friday and a work do towards the end of Jan.

Edit - just checked my calendar. No chance of doing 20 days dry unless I either a) don’t drink on 4 nights where I have work do’s or b) don’t drink on at least 2 days of every weekend between now and end Jan

I think I might modify to 15 days.....

I've done a fair few dry months when I've been training for running competitions in the past. I used to be big binge drinker at the weekends, normally. Once you get past 2 weeks it does genuinely get easier.

The best mindset to have is "I'm not going to drink TODAY" and take it from there. Setting a big target of a month can set you up for a fail.

The longest period I went without booze was nearly 3 months from beginning of Jan to near the end of March in 2015. The plan was to just do one month I think but you actually feel good about yourself and want to go even longer as you don't miss the drink like you thought you would. I decided to reward myself with a few beers at Stoke away that season and I did bloody enjoy it to be honest!

I do think any dry period helps if you are actually doing it for yourself. It should always be a personal thing and not for recognition from others. Anyone who is feeling it's difficult after 10 or so days, stick with it, I promise you that if you reach 2-3 weeks it becomes fairly easy, or at least it did for me, and I was someone that had only ever gone 2 weeks previously a lifetime ago when I had flu or something.

I've been dry for 366 days now
Heineken 0.0 has been great, I wish it came in bigger cans but normally a pint or 2 is enough of it anyway then I'm back to water.
My wife likes Echo Fall's non alcoholic sparkling wine and its cheap too.

If you like gin & tonic I highly recommend checking out the Seedlip products. Zero alcohol "spirits" that are not cheap, but very good.
