I am not that interested in charisma, as we know how that often turns out. I want integrity, honesty and transparency.

Sir Keir was on the (excellent) football clichés podcast yesterday. Fairly plain answers to the questions but he seems like a decent and genuine bloke who likes football in the same way as many of us do

And perhaps just a soupçon of competence?

Me too. But unfortunately that isn't how it works in the UK.

His Desert Island Discs is a good listen too. Andy Burnham on Carragher's podcast is great. You can tell he is a proper football man.

Other countries are not Britain, so no point going down that road.

As for 2017, parties do not operate in a vacuum - leaders, parties and manifestos are always judged in comparison to the rest of the current political landscape at the time.

You are aware that 'hard left' and 'oppose nothing' aren't the only options, right? Not to mention that 2019 wasn't anywhere near hard left, at least not in the historical context. It may seem very lefty but that's because our economic policy is anything but moderate, it's right wing, and predominantly inspired by the right wing equivalents of Marx. That's what I think Labour should be doing - pointing out how far to the right our economic (and some other) policy has gone and why this is a problem, not just acquiescing to it. Which they can easily do without being 'hard left'.
You may or may not be correct about where the Tory economic policy comes from, but the fact it is the economic equilibrium has shifted rightwards from the Thatcher era onwards, and policies drawn from the postwar era are hard left in today's context.

Thatcher was a devotee of Friedman and Hayek, and that's where the UK's economic policy (not just the Tories) has largely come from ever since, with some exceptions. That's why inequality has risen consistently since the 80s, regardless of which colour rosette has been in power.

I acknowledged 2019 was left in today's context, and said what I thought Labour should be doing about it. I don't see the value in merely saying 'well, it is what it is, we can't change anything.' If you aren't trying to change perceptions, what's the point of you as an opposition?

On another note, just seen this:

I like some of it, but is it mandatory for Starmer to use the phrase 'when I was Director of Public Prosecutions' in every speech or article he does? It sounds so forced and over-repeated.

And apropos of nothing, because I've seen a tweet of his, Wes Streeting is such a plank.

That's uncalled for. Because he disagrees with you about Israel and about what is and isn't anti-semitism ,doesn't make him a racist towards Palestinians. People sling the term about at times far too readily, just as Israeli right wingers sling the term 'anti-semite' about far too readily.

Anyway, thought you were against 'whataboutery',or is that only when it suits

Haven’t seen the pic.

No matter. Politicians in being hypocritical wankers shock.
