It's down to Sven-Goran Erikson

as to wether AJ stays. What we need is for Sven to tell him he will still pick him while he's in the Championship.

We need AJ to play so well for England that Sven wants to pick him regardless. A few sparkling displays plus goals would not go amiss. I think it is better for him that he plays for Palace in the Championship for one season than plays 15 games in the Premiership with a top side. Let's face it, if he went to the Premiership, only the top clubs could afford him, and he would not necessarily start every game if he went there, especially if he had a goalscoring drought.

Reality check:

If AJ were to put in 'a few sparkling displays' for England it would further increase his chances of a big move.

Playing in the Championship will not benefit his career in any way, shape or form at his age.

There are a number of teams who will be able to outlay the price for AJ.

Because we're in a significantly weaker position as a seller following relegation. West Ham, the only team who have made significant money from selling players in recent years, were very lucky that when they went down Abramovic had just taken over at Chelsea or they would have got far less for their players, and generally the fact that we will probably need to sell AJ will cause his value to diminish. Regardless of his talent (and AJ is a brilliant player) values of players are relative, and the fact that we are now a Championship side with significantly reduced revenue will have a negative effect on what we could expect to receive from selling him. Furthermore, Jordan will be acutely aware that Johnson's value would further diminish if in January we don't look like making an immediate return to the Premiership. If you figure in these factors, and that AJ will probably want a move back to the Premiership in order to enhance his international prospects, 10m is far in excess of what we could expect to receive for him.

Unfortunately.

Of course his value would diminish in the championship which is why i only said ten mill, but look at the fact that AJ is 24,eng international, goal machine,on long term contract and happy at palace all adds up to the fact that it would take a very serious bid to sell him 6 mill imo is not serious. i think we'll be up in the top 6 next season np. andy reid for example went for around 4-5 million and hes not in aj's class.

Sven needs to say something along the lines of:

"Look mate, lets face it you're very very good, but bar someone getting a nasty injury you won't be at the world cup next year. Have a season in the Championship, get Palace promoted and we'll meet again in September 06"

The fact that we're in the Championship and that AJ will most probably want a move back to the Premiership will be by far more significant than the length of his contract or his excellence and achievements as a player.

We will have to sell him. That puts us into a weaker position in terms of the sort of fee we could demand for him. I reckon we'll get 7m tops.

But what if we keep dowie and jordan actually gives him some money , i think that could be enough to keep AJ at selhurst. anyway we obviously disagree on the price tag so lets wait till august and one of us can say told you so .

Its down to Dowie - if he stays then he will convince others including AJ to stay - in both of them we have two of the most loyal managers/footballers. If they stay and AJ is banging the goals in this time next year and we are running away with it then Sven will know that Palace are premiership bound and that means AJ too so his chances of World Cup duty will improve

Leading England in goalscoring again from the Championship after already being capped should be enough to get a call-up or two. I'm sure scoring 35 goals from 46 games in the Championship says a lot more than scoring 10 goals from 25 Premiership matches, most of which as a sub. He can probably bag 50 if he plays like he did this season.

Interesting comment from Lowe that he might consider a one season loan deal for Crouch if it meant him having a chance to play for England, with the option to take him back to Saints if they get promoted. Personally, I doubt that's a genuine offer in his case as he's probably just trying to deflect some of the flak he's getting from their 'fans'. Could be an interesting idea to conisder for AJ though (only maybe only if we can get a decent championship level replacement to cover for him).
