Also has anyone ever ransferred al thier Outlook folders/emails etc to thier MAC email? Is it an easy thing to do (tere seem to be lots of progs that offer the capability but I'm not sure which is the best/works!) and also if any of you use it regularly enough that you could comment on if you think its better/worse than Outlook? I do like Outlook but its a slow prog in my opinion and takes ages when you first turn it on to sort itself out!!

Thanks in advance as always
Why even bother downloading email? Just use gmail.

That will be why Outlook runs so slow then, its indexing like most MS products is shocking.

You can do gmail offline now as well although I've no idea how good it is as I've never used it.

Search on gmail is so good, any word in any email is easily searched and you can tag with multiple entries, when are you out of range of a wifi connection these days?

To view the link you have to Register or Login is free and worth a try, just install thunderbird on your windows vm and give it a try (it will be slow for 4gb but you only have to do it once)

alternatively O2M seems to be the popular consensed tool and only $10

Only had my MacBook a few weeks, and I've been seeing the 'spinning wheel' a lot recently on both iTunes and Safari- its really frustrating!

Could it be my huge amount of music and therefore the laptop is becoming slow? Or could it because I have a virus?!

How much free disk space do you have left? Also, how much memory in your machine?

I'm still on Tiger but I suspect this will be the same for Leopard. Got to;
Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor. Select 'Window' and then Activity Monitor>Disk usage. It might also be worth repairing your disk permissions if you have been installing a lot of files etc.

How does lack of free space make OSx slower?

The less disk space the more chance that the swap file is repeatedly hit. In the worst case you end up with thrashing.

78gb Used (40 of which is music) with 154gb free space
The whole idea in getting a Mac was that it wouldn't slow down just because I had a few tunes on it- especially after only a few weeks usage

Starting to regret spending the 1,000

Anything else it could be?

No, that's how virtual memory works. Read any introductory book on operating systems.

Is there anything else running in the background? Have a look in Activity Monitor (see fang's post) and sort by the CPU column. That will show you what processes are being used most heavily. You may need to select 'All Processes' from the pop-up menu at the top.

It's significantly different on Linux and Solaris, the amount of free disk space does not dictate how dirty pages in swap go to disk.

Edit:

Just read up and yes indeed OSx uses a directory where 80Mb swap files are written to as opposed to the linux and Solaris dedicated swap partition.

No processes' are lurking in the background
Only AirPort, iTunes, Word and Safari as far as I'm aware
Funnily enough, the Activity Monitor was taking up most of the CPU!

Is it worth taking it into Apple and having a good all moan that the laptop is a pile of turd?

Ollie try repairing disk permissions first. If it's still under warranty by all means contact Apple.
