Surely having the Socialist Worker's Party on the right wing would be playing them out of position?

Good article from Michael Owen on Wayne Rooney and England in the Telegraph a few days ago, for me he's spont on.

He is still one of the best strikers in the world, even though he has had two quiet games. I know he got frustrated on Friday night. I know Wayne.

He is fiercely competitive. When things are not going right for somebody with such a winning mentality as him frustration spills over.
In Wayne's defence, he has played virtually every game for Manchester United this season. He has not had a winter break and he has had the pressure of scoring goals for United for a long time.

Wayne has high expectations and the nation has a lot of hope pinned on him with England at the World Cup.

I led the line for England for many years myself, and it was my job to score goals. If I went one game at a tournament without scoring, I would feel in a bit of a hole. Wayne will be feeling that.

Wayne will be desperate to do well, so for him and the team to get booed, is a bad mixture. He is trying so hard and then everybody turns on him and the team. But I can promise you with Wayne he'll be even more frustrated inside than he seems on the outside.

The draw with Algeria was very disappointing. We did not play particularly well. We did not create enough chances. It is not the same England we have been watching in qualifying, there was no real spark. Wayne is so important. One influential player like Wayne can spark the other 10.

When I started off at Liverpool, the team was built around Steve McManaman.

If McMamanan wasn't on top form, Robbie Fowler didn't get many chances and we were an average team. England need Wayne on form. I know the manager will get it right for Port Elizabeth. The manager is very experienced; he has played more formations than I have played games.

The beauty of football is that everybody has opinions, and everyone in the nation will have their team to beat Slovenia. I am a big believer that all the top teams, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United and Liverpool, need to control midfield in the top games. If you cannot control midfield, as we saw against America, then you leave your back-four pretty exposed.

Personally, I would like to see Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Gareth Barry, some of our best players, playing in exactly the roles they do for their clubs. Gareth can sit and that gives Frank and Stevie licence to join in the attack, doing what they do so successfully at their clubs, scoring so many goals every year.

As Stevie showed against America, late runs are so difficult to track.

The most pressing issue is how to do we score goals. I know people said we missed chances against America but did we really? Stevie scored and Emile Heskey missed a good one-on-one so we scored one out of two really good chances. There were also a couple of half-chances, but they were only that. We need to be creating four or five good chances and we didn't create anything against Algeria.

I would play Wayne up top alone. If you look at Manchester United, the manager in the majority of games will go 4-4-2 but as soon as we come up against AC Milan, Chelsea or Arsenal, the manager will often play Wayne up and drop me or Berba to the bench. You need to win that midfield battle.

Look at the Champions League final with Inter Milan; they've got one of their best strikers in the world in Samuel Eto'o and where does he play in the big games? Right midfield. Jose Mourinho plays Diego Milito up front on his own and Eto'o on the right. Tactics evolve and many managers play one up now.

We need to beat Slovenia and people might say playing one up is a bit defensive but you can afford to do that if the wingers get down the flanks. I would continue with Aaron Lennon on the right. I know he has not set the world alight in this tournament but I would push him up the right wing, tell him to attack the full-back, making sure England support the lone striker from every angle.

I would play Joe Cole on the left, again really pushing on. If one gets caught out of position, we have got three in midfield and one can shuffle across. This 4-3-3 gives us more flexibility than 4-4-2. 4-4-2 is a good formation but when a team are lacking in confidence, as England are at the minute, it gets a bit rigid.

I am sure Joe Cole was frustrated at not getting on but I am also sure all the unused subs were. It is tough: they are away from their family and want to make an impact for the country. But players must think of the team and not be a bad influence, having a long face around the hotel.

Opportunities will arise.

With Jamie Carragher suspended, there is an opening in defence for Michael Dawson or Matthew Upson in Port Elizabeth. Slovenia are a good team but Dawson and Upson have more than enough experience and quality to handle them.

Dawson and Upson play against better players every week in the Premier League. I would presume the manager would go for Upson because he was in the original squad so he would be ahead in the pecking order.

At least, things seem to be settled in goal. Our best performance against Algeria was the goalkeeper. David James's handling was great, his kicking great.

At the end, I just felt pretty relieved in the end. We have only got two points but it is still in our hands. We are pretty lucky. If Slovenia or US had won, it might have been out of our hands. I am confident we will do something about it.

again, BBC says Defoe and Milner start in place of Heskey and Lennon. And those are the only other changes along with Upson.

but they could of course be wrong

The suggestion is it might be Milner on the right though - so Garrard might well still be wide.

I think it'll be narrower. Something like this:

---------------------------James----------------------------
Johnson-------Terry--------------Upson----------Cole

----------Milner---------Lampard----------Barry-------

--------------------------Gerrard--------------------------
---------------Rooney-------------Defoe----------------

Johnson and Cole bombing down the flanks. Milner creating in midfield. Lampard running around in that weird style of his, and missing a pen at some point
