Grimsby also had one fewer player on the pitch.

West Ham we defending the point. Grimsby camped in their own box all game. They may have had a player more but they defended less deep and there were more spaces in and around the area. |

So they were both defending a draw then; Steve’s right.

When our CB had the ball against West Ham, where were their players? Now answer the same for Grimsby.

People still finding fault with Meyer. Not consistent? How on earth can he show what he can do when like Sorloth has been given cameo roles for the most part. Added to being played out wide on the left. Wilf always seems more energised when Meyer is on the pitch. His vision for a pass is quite something. I'd rather see him in midfield than Schlupp and Ayew combined. He's got as many goals as Ayew in EPL. He is class compared to some. Roy not convinced because Meyer is a chicken that still has its head

This statement rather removes the nuance from any manager's tactics. It's like saying our 4-4-2 with Townsend and Zaha up front is the same as when we had Wright and Bright playing up top. Two obviously different systems.
There was room to get at West Ham hence Zaha and Meyer being able to play a strangely long one-two inside their box; there wasn't room to get at Grimsby. |

Would like to see Meyer start on Saturday, with Bats and Ben together upfront. Why not?

He looked much better on Saturday, finding little pockets of space and turning to play a FORWARD ball or driving run, rather than picking the ball up in front of the opposition midfield and playing the easy pass.
This is what we've lacked, someone who drifts in behind sleeping midfielders. |

Meyer is class and it’s disappointing how Hodgson has used him. I’m not surprised this has happened as he prefers grafters and headless chicken in midfield over technical quality.
I think Meyer’s time will come eventually. He’s too good a player for it not to. |

When Dann and Kelly had the ball against Grimsby, they were all in their own area still. Dann and Kelly had space, lots of it, almost the entire pitch in fact, it is why they saw so much of the ball, it is why they had so many shots from 20-25 yards. The rest did not. |

The problems was the midfield was too defensive, to much graft and not enough craft. Meyer created as many shooting opportunities in 12 minutes as Schluup and McArthur did in a combined 168, McArthurs 1 being the assist. Despite that Schluup probably outperformed Macca in the middle and Macca has not looked good for a few games now. |

Tbh, I probably would have Meyer in my first choice team, but I can also see good reasons why he isn't currently, and lots of the pro-Meyer sentiments seem to be based as much on wishful thinking as evidence.

The Max situation seems to be a revolving door.
He comes on as a sub, does extremely well & creates chances for himself and others with his slick passing and quick turn of pace against tiring defences. He then gets him chance for a game or two from the start and doesn't really impose himself on the game like he did in the sub performances. Ultimately, he gets subbed and then is back on the bench.......and repeat for the next few games. I personally would have in in our team as he's a playmaker and can make a chance with his quick thinking, especially with Wilf on the left. |
