When people say it could get messy, what do they mean? Wilf handing in a transfer request (in person, not via his brother/press), refusing to turn up to training, downing tools completely? If we hold firm and don’t accept a derisory offer, what happens next? Presumably we withhold his wages? Sue him for loss of earnings when we don’t win games because our star player is refusing to stick to the terms of his contract?

Great Journalism!

Argos style payments and eyewatering £120 Million rated Zaha.

Anyone would think that Arsenal are now run by Levy?!

Unlikely.

If it gets messy he'll rot out his contract until we finally accept an offer closer to £20million from someone like Villa 18 months down the line.

Could go a few ways: He stays and goes next season, Arsenal up their offer to a more reasonable one or he becomes the next Berahino and stinks out the reserves.

Actually, scratch the first & last part.

One thing you can say for sure about Wilf is he is an extremely commited athlete and footballer. I can't actually see him going on strike. He may well be unhappy but he'll still give his all. It's in his DNA.

I wonder if a genuinely big club, one that actually does stand a chance of winning something, showed some interest, would the dream move to the theatre of spat dummies hold such weight?

It’s 1st July which is traditionally the renegotiate an improved contract season for Wilf, like Easter, Christmas and other yearly events. It’s borderline boring now.
If we can give Dougie the cash he will unearth some gems like Sorloth that will more than compensate.....

That’s kind of what I was getting at. We’d be mugs to accept a bid lower than £75m. There are several players in the PL that would be snapped up at this price and a whole lot more (Pogba, Kane, salah, de bruyn, mane to name a few). If wilf really wants to leave and play CL football he should knuckle down for another season with little old palace and make clubs fall over themselves to buy him with consistent brilliance, even more goals, assists and end product.

Honestly I think he'd sulk for a bit maybe a few matches. BUT he's at Afcon and if Ivory Coast progress to near the final he'll need a longer break anyway. So ultimately given his contract situation and how he is generally in terms of wanting to play I can't see the threats lasting very long once the window has closed. If we're smart we set his break up so he's on holiday until near the close of the window. So his 'strike' begins near or after the start of the season leaving him with no wages and no football for at least half a season. Fairly sure much like Mahrez he'll come round even if it's just down to sheer boredom and no premiership football.

Tell Arsenal publicly and irrevocably that they are allowed one week and no more than three bids for consideration before we announce pulling the plug on any possibility of Wilf leaving. Tell them their £40M joke offer is considered the first offer and so only two are left. Make their piss-take offer stand against them and make time their enemy. Or we could announce that a £40M offer for a player like Wilf is 'an insult to the player's achievements and skill.' See if we can unsettle Arsenal by making them seem disrespectful to Wilf by using such media bullshit against them, just like they are doing to us with their joke offer.

They gave us 24 hours to accept their offer for Wright back in 1991 and I guess they still think they can bully us, like back then. It infuriates me that they would never dare offer such a derisory figure to one of the big boys for a valued player and I would love to see them feel some pressure on this. Who the f*ck do they think they are? We have a five year deal with Wilf that is costing us a fortune so the Gooners can do one if they want to piss about.

Well done Neil Ashton. He sometimes plays down his Palace connection but he's gone into bat for us big time with this story & headline.

Also, he's not quite in the position Mahrez was where he was pretty much universally acclaimed as a first rate player.

No club in the world hands out 130k+ per week unless they think a player can hold down a first team place. If he wants to play for a top club and it doesn't happen this window, he's going to have to continue to prove himself. Going on strike or putting in lacklustre performances is only going to make it less likely to happen.

Sure it’s not great to see your star player wanting to leave but the fact is he’s given a lot to the club and repaid our investment and then some. If he wants a move after being here 6 years that’s his call.

Everything from here on in is haggling and negotiation.
Of course in theory your right but your forgetting as is Wilf what we’ve done for him. He was going nowhere at Cardiff on loan and it was us that rescued him and career to get him where he is today. He needs to respect this and realise the club would let him go on our terms. Ps all this bollox about Arsenal having small budget is rubbish they’ve already had a bid accepted for a Celtic player and bidding for another player . **** em £80 mill or **** off.

Presumably their budget’s even smaller now then, If they’ve allocated money to other players - wonder what the other clubs they are negotiating with have said to their extended payment plan....... oh just Palace then.

If Arsenal buy somone else for any kind of fee, they won't be able to even honour the bid they've supposedly made. If they sell they likes of Aubameyang, at least we stand to get a reasonable price. If it goes to deadline day, we can just reject everything below 80 million on the grounds we wouldn't have time to sign a replacement.
Absolutely. We don't want to sell and don't have to sell so have every reasonable expectation of getting what we want on this. As you say, Arsenal will be paralysed about honouring other transfer commitments if Wilf's deal and final cost isn't known so they must move fairly fast. We're happy if no deal happens at all so we can deliver an ultimatum that we need this deal to happen fast if it will happen at all, since it will take time to find replacements for Wilf.

Now the pressure is all on Arsenal. They know they must act quickly or Wilf will become frustrated at them dallying and pissing about when we have made the reasonable statement that we can't wait too long on the deal for the above reasons. Arsenal know we can use that as our excuse not to let Wilf go at all. Plus, Arsenal need this resolved for their own transfer policy not to be stymied by time.

Because of all this, we get to set the terms. They pay the right price, and quickly, or they miss out and it wasn't because we stood in Wilf's way. As long as we play this right, we should be able to make the kind of money required to survive the creative gulf this team will have post-Wilfred Zaha. Unlike twenty-eight years ago, Arsenal don't get to walk off with our best player exclusively on their terms.

I agree, and he cares about Palace to boot.

My prediction is that the situation will get a bit uglier before it gets better. Arsenal is unlikely to offer what is needed. The saga will go on and on until the window closes.

SP will have to call Wilf’s brother’s bluff, a contract is a contract and the offer is just unacceptable from Arsenal. If Wilf were to hand in a transfer request, it would be even less likely he would be sold this window. Out of principle, SP would hold the line.

Then there will be some question about Wilf’s commitment to the club for a period of time. Player power blah blah blah. A bit of a strop.

Everyone will eventually kiss and make up, Wilf will stay at Palace with a decent attitude, and then be sold in January or more likely next summer when a more serious bid comes in.

If PSG sell Mbappe this window, all bets are off!
