Because a lot of them will pay themselves a low salary and top up with dividends.

Dividends are paid out of the company P&L account reserves. While a company may be losing money now, if it has historic profits in reserve, it can pay the reserves as dividends now if it so wishes. Obviously it may run out of reserves at some point, making dividends not possible then.

Good luck with the interest free loans. I've been waiting on the line for an hour to speak to Barclays. I suspect they may be busy.

As Maz said thanks very much B_E for posting the advice.

It was as I had thought, but also like Maz it hadn't occurred to me that you could rotationally furlough so to speak. (I wonder whether it was a Watford fan that came up with that)

A week on and a week off is actually a really good idea.

That's terrible.

But worse than that, far worse than that, when I have been speaking to people over the last few weeks who just don't get it, I get that woeful coca cola, christmas lorry advert repeating in the back of my head

corona virus is coming, corona virus is coming....

It's acracker ; b_e is a real star. Effectively, I can if necessary reduce people to working 1/2 day weeks without them being penalised.

My missus works at a nursery. They, like schools, have been told they have to work to look after key children. They had 1 kid in today and 30 staff.

She received a message this afternoon that her nursery is closing but they are merging with their ‘hub’ nursery at another location. Now I’m not best pleased that she’s having to go to work in the first place, potentially risking the health of herself, our two year old son and her dad who lives with us (has had two heart attacks so is in the ‘at risk’ category I believe, as he gets out of breath walking up the stairs!), but understand that doctors kids need to be looked after, so I don’t know the solution to that..

But from a legal point of view, could she turn round and refuse to work at this other venue that is not her ‘contracted place of work’? Does she have a right to refuse to work on government advice that we shouldn’t work ‘unless absolutely necessary’ (30:1 ratio is not necessary)? Could she say she’s potentially risking her fathers life if she catches the virus at work and brings it home to him?

Would she be entitled to this new government scheme or not?

Her manager doesn’t seem to have a clue about her options regards to pay either!

That's not the advice is it?

(BTW, does she actually have a specific place of work in her contract? )

Well it says ‘your place of work will be xxxx’, although as it’s a nursery chain that she works for I guess that might not have much weight behind it.
