Most of those who replaced them had no experience of playing against League 2 players and will have got a bit of a reality check.

Perhaps the fact that Liverpool U21s lost last night 5-0 to League 2 Port Vale puts our result into perspective.

Now we are out of this competition, both our PL2 and U18s can carry on their excellent progress in their respective leagues

Would be interesting to see how these teams got on if the competition wasn’t played during the international break.

But all in all the competition is a bit of a farce, the EFL teams don’t take it seriously and play the weakest teams they possibly can while still sticking to the rules, and the international break means that half of the academies are being sent to slaughter as they have to play their second team too!

They have the league, the FA Cup, The League Cup and the League Trophy. You cannot blame them for not taking the 4th competition less seriously can you? Most PL sides put their reserves out in the League cup, especially in early rounds.

Lets say a League 1 side wins their League Cup opener and gets into the 3rd round draw of the FA cup which is when the bigger clubs come in. That is not that unlikely is it?

2 - League Cup games
3 - League Trophy games

54 - total games for the season (Palace in the last couple of years have played about 40)

Yup and they could have a run in any of 3 cups.

Was looking for a realistic minimum number and 54 seems about right. Chances are reasonable for playing 60+ games for some clubs!

Really?

AFC Wimbledon, against Sutton, a game they could draw and go through, a win all but guaranteed progression and playing a League 2 team.

Their Gk was 1st choice. Apart from that only 3 players have started 10 of their 15 games. 4 have not even come on as a substitute in the league this season. The other 3 have played a bit but not what you would call 1st team regulars necessarily.

Portsmouth put experience in their back line at RB and CB but apart from that is was an inexperienced side.

As they go through the rounds they might take it more seriously as Wembley becomes a more likely prospect but they don't take it seriously early on - hence why competitions rules exist to ensure they cannot play full reserve teams.

Big couple of seasons for the lad. Head down, train hard and some extra gym sessions. Needs to make sure he is getting loads of rest in between all of that as well.
