As has been evidenced so many times in this thread, Ian, a player can be the standout talent in their age group at one time, and then have been overtaken by many others just a few months nature.
That's the way it is with youth development. Also we don't see these guys in training and most importantly we don't know what their personality is like. One agent told me he won't sign a youth team player until he knows much more about their personality.
To be clear, not saying Mooney is anything other than a model pro, but that factors in to youth development too. Palace clearly thought when they gave him (and Raymond) pro deals to sign on their 17th birthdays that they were outstanding talents.
What's interesting about Wells-Morrison is that he is possibly the best of the lot and yet has never really stood out. He does simple things well, he has an all-round game and he's quite versatile too. He was probably the best player in the Floodlit Cup final but generally he's always been the one you look at and go 'If there's one who isn't obviously really good who might come out of the pack, it's him."
Anyway what I'm getting at is that just because someone does really well and is outstanding at 16, doesn't mean they'll maintain that by 18.
