We never ask any shop to hold in to records they can’t sell, they wouldn’t be able to take risks.

I can understand that for actual shop type shops, but would have thought Bezos' empire would be a bit different.

All you are talking about is who manages risk of stock obsolescence. You can put that anywhere you want in a supply chain, for instance who manages risk of stock obsolescence in a corner shop on £10 box of chocolates. That’s a tiny business and they manage that risk and that is reflected in the price they charge their customers.

If you take risk you expect to take the margin on managing the risk. If Amazon won’t take risk on stock obsolescence someone selling to amazon prices accordingly, and if they don’t like the price Amazon are prepared to pay then they won’t sell to them. If amazon becomes the only route to market then that becomes an issue.

Fat flippin' chance.
However I like to imagine the conversation with the artist or manager - "no your record isn't in the biggest music retail outlet in the world, because we refused to let them have the same conditions as "Dientes Largos" in Pamplona."

If the artist wants his music sold through that platform and amazon’s t&cs say you manage stock obsolescence, and you cannot influence price at the Amazon end then the artist is going to take the hit.

Ultimately if every company in your shoes has to manage stock obsolescence risk without being rewarded for it through margin, eventually you will all go out of business.

Companies paying huge fees to their parent company, usually based in low tax jurisdictions, for the 'image rights' for their brand are a massive con.

They certainly can be, but not always. Brand clearly has value, how you value it is quite complicated though and is hugely different depending on the market. The brand value on something like a Latte is waaaaaay more important than on something that is, well not as homogeneous as a coffee flavoured hot milkshake.

Leaving aside the value for time being, because there are decent comparables for that (like franchise fees - what a third party is prepared to pay to use a brand), and picking up the low tax jurisdiction point. Here the thing is to establish what that company in the low tax jurisdiction does to that Brand. Brand is IP. How was that IP created, how is it developed, how is it managed. Where is all that activity done? Now if that’s done in a low tax jurisdiction then that’s where the profits should be taxed.

If you, as a country, really have the arsehole with that you can apply what’s known as a withholding tax to the royalty stream (the payment for the right to use the IP) and that’s a tax on revenue for the recipient. Under U.K. domestic tax law we withhold 20% on royalty payments to non-residents (unless there is another overriding law, like a tax treaty or EU directive).

If there is no or Insufficient substance in the other jurisdiction in respect of the IP then there are all manner of routes we can use to get them.

Not paying taxes is the single most important thing a citizen or concern can do, but only if enough do it.

The 'elective dictatorship' of the UK cannot be changed by voting, but government excesses can be curbed by denial of the means.

Good luck with that.

You’ll notice that over the years HMRC has moved the responsibility for determination and collection of taxes away from those who cannot be trusted to those who can.

Not paying tax has certainly worked for Amazon, but it has also worked for us.

You get your stuff delivered and it is efficient with negligible cost.

All you will ever get from the state is an everlasting IOU of zillions of unquantifiable debt, which you assume does not apply to you.

I don't know why people instantly refer to Marx, as he would probably have got his stuff from Amazon were he alive today.

I can just see him reading 'Das Kapital' on his kindle paperwhite.

How about they pay their workers better instead of paying that 'due' tax, then that would help everybody.
