Its like china, the party is in control but the economy is capitalist, entrepreneurial. Its true they are a long way behind Britain but standards have risen quickly and theres no reason to think it wont continue.

That brands add value has been evidenced for a long time (I used to help run the company that originated the first brand valuation), not least in the absolute £age that companies are willing to pay to acquire them.

Whether that value is tangible or intangible, (what you curiously call 'psychological manipulation', in true M McL fashion, as though somehow it's all hidden subliminals) is neither here nor there : it has a genuine added asset value for shareholders. In accountancy terms, I rather think it can be summed up as 'goodwill' (the value beyond the base value of the product), but brand valuation is without doubt one of the most significant developments in manufacturing in the last 100 years.

(Your point about branding increasing the price is particularly inaccurate. In general, the more a manufacturer sells of a product, the more cheaply he is able to offer it to the market. Marketing/branding/advertising helps broaden the appeal of a product or service and thus allows for significant cost savings. Again, this has been evidenced for many decades now, and proof is not hard to find).
If i knew how to pos rep from my tablet i would.

Some of the stuff going on with Amazon is scary. Their expansion plans in the UK are going to cause a lot of misery for small businesses, retailers and suppliers. They’ve just bought a £120m site near Gateshead for a huge warehouse but more importantly they are opening distribution hubs in more rural areas from which local partners (self employed drivers) can deliver. Bad news indeed for local shops.

You would have hated Shakespeare’s neologisms.

Weird how it only ever seems to get used in a passive voice.

Are you one of these old-timers who erroneously believes that the passive voice is a Bad Thing?

Is that a thing? It would make it hellishly difficult to speak Spanish.

It is a thing over here (and in the US), unfortunately. Orwell once slagged it off while unwittingly using the passive voice, the clot.

What an odd literary consumer combo

Homage to soft furnishing?

Quilt down and out in Paris and London?

Keep the aspidistra wallpaper flowing?

The farm animal print collection?

Greeks and biscuits are a difficult combo to digestive but there is no raisin you can't unify the Italian Cicero with biscuits into a Garibaldi. the UK and Nietzche with a bit of non-self effacing Battenberg and to come back full circle, the drunken Descartes may well have dipped his bourbons.
