We have the players best 13-14 outside of Top 6 but we play this holding on for dear life survival football, a top coach would be able to do so much more.

Roy at WBA and Fulham has his teams well into the top half. After their scrap in his first half season, they didn’t go close again on his watch.

I thought that’s what he’d do this season. He may still, but is making hard work of it.

When you consider the bad press BFS gets for his style of football , I much preferred the football under BFS, Roy not only wasted the talent available when England manager he is now wasting our best 13-14 players assembled we could only ever dare to dream off, he has done so well to make them look average. I don’t know how players like Wilf keep hanging in there this season should of been so different. Especially when you also consider how wasted a great chance to progress in the Caraboa cup.

Yeah, we hardly lost to a team outside the top 7 last season after Hodgson took over. This season has been awful in comparison. Be interesting to know if Hodgson had a weaker side at Fulham or West Brom in his second season at those clubs. We lost Cabaye and Loftus-Cheek in the summer and havenít brought in any quality to replace them.

We need to score more and we need to be better against the teams around us. Its almost like the the vibes from the BBS mach day threads ar reaching the players. Defesively we are not conceding all that many but mistakes are being accentuated by our lack of goals.

When you look at the Fulham team he took to the UEFA Final - itís hardly flush with Champions League quality - but good grafters

Mark Schwarzer, Chris Baird, Aaron Hughes, Paul Konchesky, Brede Hangeland, Dickinson etuhu, Danny Murphy, Damien Duff, Simon Davies, ZoltŠn Gera, Bobby zamora.

The under-performance this season is partly due to the lack of investment. Roy isn't responsible for those financial conditions, and he isn't responsible for scouting/transfers/contracts.

I'm happy to criticise the conservative tactics. But you cannot ignore the fact that Allardyce, Pulis and Hodgson have all avoided relegation by going back to basics with defensive tactics and solid team shape. We get in trouble every time we lose focus on our relative place in the pecking order.

It may not look pretty to everybody, but we don't have a lot of choice until money becomes available. Hopefully that happens over the summer.

Agree with all that. Roy has his hands tied behind his back. The XI he can put out is a lot worse than last season, compounded by Benteke's injury and Wickham's setbacks. Sign someone like RLC and keep Benteke or Wickham fit and we will climb the table and start to look like the side we all know we have the potential to be.

"Like" being the key word there. If we sign RLC we all know he'd last about three games then be out for six months injured.

We obviously need to keep our distance versus the teams below but the gap above is one that will close between games 30-38.

Leicester, Bournemouth, Wolves, Everton and Watford won't have the pressure to win that title/champions-league chasing or relegation avoiding sides will have.

They will pick up less points and if we can string some results together - as we have in previous years - then we could still break that top 10.

We have got this far up the league without Benteke or Wickham. If (and maybe a big if) we can get at least one of them scoring.....

The XI isnít worse than last season . We wonít be getting RLC in this window but we have enough quality to rise up the table . If we had another 3 wins under our belts most would be crowing this is our best side ever , itís fine margins .

Zaha
Benteke

Making of a top half side but the midfield is weak, if you have Cabaye and RLC in that side in the gaps you can see why we stormed up the table.

I think our midfield is what is holding us back, Mcarthur, Meyer, Kouyate are not going to take us to the next level. Meyer could potentially slot in next to Luka but doesn't seem to be of the Cabaye mold to do it. And if we are playing Andros and Wilf up front our midfield is even weaker.

Maybe a new manager comes in and changes the system to fit some in but Kouyate has been good for us but he isn't one to take us to the next level which is what we need. I think Roy is doing the best with what he is being given.

It's odd but the likes of Southampton seem to find managers who can turn season around. This latest whose name I won't try to spell has taken the same squad as Hughes had and made them look a different side. As much as it sickens me OGS has turned united around with same squad as JM. I think a decent forward thinking manager would get more from our squad. Even David Wagner or Jokanovic.

Overall I think Roy’s done a great job but I was very disappointed with him on 5Live tonight. He was really playing down the importance of the FA Cup - repeating what he said in the week about staying up being the only thing that matters. He also said the attendance being 5k down demonstrated what the supporters think of the competition. Don’t think it’s mind games and whilst it might be the reality for a club like ours it puts a downer on the day for me.

They may have gone back to basics but the other two also found ways to get goals. Pulis majored on set pieces, Allardyce got Townsend and Zaha playing closer to Benteke (admittedly he hasn't been available for Roy much this season). Too often our game plan appears to be hold out for a point and hope something happens up front as a bonus. That, for me, is the difference between Roy and, certainly BFS.

We're currently in this never ending cycle of defensive tactics working against good teams and everybody professing him a mastermind and the exact same set of tactics making hard work of lesser teams and everybody moaning about his negativity.

He is, quite simply, inflexible. In response to the thread title he has earnt us exactly what we deserve playing like that - a group of players capable of upper mid table are entering February well in a relegation battle but with enough standout results along the way to keep most onside.

Just pointing out we had a more potent, quality 11 last year imo. Odd really that Roy was given the freedom if London for getting that side to tenth but this year is a flop for not getting this side into Europe.
