The Brokenwood Mysteries nice chilled out police series from New Zealand. A bit like Midsummer murders down under.

Oz on Sky Atlantic. Hard hitting US prison drama from the late 90's , very intense, but a great watch.

I quite liked it too. J.K. Simmons is brilliant in everything I've seen him in.

I have a theory that the best actors, aren't just good actors, they also have the benefit of a unique voice or features. Even better with both.

Vin Diesel is the exception.

I'm binge-watching Handmaid's Tale. I've done Season 1 and am now on Season 2 Ep 4 - Christ it is bloody depressing. I'm on the verge of ditching it. We get it! It's really bad! They are nasty people! Now let's do something else other than torturing and maiming people for a change huh? A little bit of light at the end of the tunnel would be nice now and again?

Curious as to how others dealt with the sheer bleakness of the whole thing I did a quick google. The first hit was this, which pretty much sums up where I am with it...

"Cattleprods! Severed tongues! Torture porn! Why I’ve stopped watching the Handmaid’s Tale"

Mrs Steamy and I got really angry with The Hamdmaid's Tale about three quarters of the way through the first series...but we laboured on through the second, getting angry at various times.

What irked us was the amount of time where Ofred was on camera brooding and doing nothing else but that. Yes, Elisabeth Moss is a fantastic actress, and it does showcase her ability to display emotion. But it seemed to be used so often and for so long that it became padding and it wound us up. The longest period I counted was over 20 seconds.

I've noticed a few other programmes since latching onto this trope. We shout at the TV for the character to stop "doing an Ofred." Mrs Wilson - which was enjoyable for the most part - overplayed the brooding a bit too much too.

The new Sunderland documentary on Netflix.
Beautiful piece of film making.
Joniesta features in a few episodes inc a couple of moving bits featuring him near start of part 6.
It's a must watch for every football fan.

Oz is widely regarded as the series that paved the way for all the excellent stuff HBO etc have churned out since, it was considered ahead of its time. Look out for Lisa Edelstein from House playing a transvestite.

Handmaids Tale, we watched the first series but couldnt see the point of the 2nd as the source material was just series one.

Currently watching Waco with Michael Shannon and Taylor Kitsch, excellent dramatisation of the seige, Kitschs sympathetic portrayal of Koresch has come in for some criticism but this doesn't detract from the fair representation of the way the FBI and the ATF behaved before, during and after.

The Innocent Man (Netflix)

A documentary produced by John Grisham about two separate investigations resulting in the imprisonment of four men from a small town in Oklahoma in the late 80s.

The first episode was okay, but it really gets going after the second when they start looking at the evidence etc...
