This is all about crisis club Man United trying to appease their disgruntled fans who after 2 years of underachieving are furious that in spite of spending millions they are no longer a top 4 club and their rivals Man City and Liverpool have left them in their wake.

That gulf in class is set to grow as they are not even close to closing the gap as last season these two teams that they are trying to keep up with were in a different class to the rest of the Premier League.

Not qualifying for the lucrative Champions League is costing them millions in lost revenue and the status of the club is falling.

The knee-jerk reaction is to sign new players to get back onside and try and be competitive with their rivals.

Wilf moving to Old Trafford was a bad career move and if Aaron moves there he will be under immense pressure to succeed and justify what would be a huge price tag for a player with only a fledgling career of playing at the top level.

I’m not sure he would be an ideal buy for any of the top 6 sides. He is probably the best defensive full back around but if you are a side that dominates possession and uses your full backs as auxiliary wingers, then he might not be quite what you need.

What's the betting that as soon as he moves to a Top 6 club he is converted to a defensive mid for that very reason? FWIW I feel he would suit a team that press hard high up the pitch. He could actually be Fernandinho's replacement as a ball winner. (Latest clickbait article by Rich Cawley suggests Man City might join in the race for AWB, although there's not a shred of evidence to support this).

All those saying that £50m+ for a right back is good business can make a decent argument. The question will be how much we miss his ball winning talents, and whether £50m will look like a snip if he turns out to be the best defensive mid in the Premier League for years and years to come.

People will call you mad for this, but Guardiola could easily do it. His passing has a long way to come though to be a midfield player in a side like Man City, even with Guardiola’s coaching.

Didn't he do something similar with Lahm at Bayern?

I don’t think he reads the game well enough or is aggressive enough to play as a DM. Great one on one defender (possibly the best in England at the moment) but I don’t think there is a huge amount to his game. Relatively speaking of course.

Yeah, he turned Lahm from a right back to a CDM. Although Lahm is a generational talent far more technically gifted than Aaron, and in Guardiola’s words, ‘the most intelligent player I’ve ever worked with.’ Moreso than Xavi, Iniesta, Messi or Busquets apparently!

I wouldn’t have said there’s that much to Sterling’s game before Guardiola took him under his wing, just another fast English dribbling winger with mediocre end product and intelligence, and look at him now.

Because Guardiola can't try to take the credit for Xavi, Iniesta or Messi.

To be fair, if he was at City he would have clever players with supreme movement off the ball options compared to here where we are set up tidy so often not a lot he can do?

Defensive midfielders often just pass simple anyway.
