regarding back, im far from an expert but may have something to do with your trainers, but COULD be your hamstrings/achilles/salus are tight.
for years i had hamstring/achilles injurys and have to do loads of stretching and physio to keep them in relative working order, but its paid off - and my lower back pains have stopped.

Good Luck
Actually I am going to go to a specialist running shop, that feature Asics. They claim to do measurements and put you on a thread mill etc. I am just assuming they will point me to Asics, though they do other brands.

So I went in and ended up with Asics Foundation 7's.....

Interesting point was I always buy size 10 1/2.... they reckoned I needed size 12.

Sort of makes sense, but feel awful big so far... I will give them a "trial run" tomorrow.

I tried on New Balance and Nike (worse ones), and a more expensive Asics, but went for these as they were more conservative looking…. Why are they all “pimped” out like a neon Las Vegas Christmas tree these days???

Hedgehog - normally you need to go half a size up to allow for the material in the running socks which can be thicker especially on longer runs, and if shoes are too tight you will end up with blisters and blackened toe nails.... like me!

And they pimp the shoes up so they can rip us off price wise I guess!

I've had the black toe thing happen. I was a bit surprised by the 1 1/2 full size bigger.... but I saw the measurement with my own eyes.

I must always wear shoes too small for me!

Just got back from a trial run (no pun intended). Shoes felt good - not too big as I feared.

They didn't make me go faster or further.... but no blisters (yet) and so far very happy.

Not sure if it will help my back though... I fear it is something else. I tried relaxing my arms this time, i.e. hang them down more, as I had read tensing the shoulders can do the back in.

Right now I have ice on my back as it's hurting.

I have been wearing orthotics for 6 years or so, and wondered if anyone out there does the same? It was designed to correct over pronating and a problem I had with a nerve in one of my toes but discussing with other runners it seems they do impact on performance so I 'm thinking of trying to run without them in shoes. On the other hand I have not has a lot of the aches and pains, so it's not a quick decision.

Doing a 10k race in south Oxfordshire tomorrow but I think I 'll leave experiment for now as aiming to do sub 45 minutes.

6.5k this morning in 30.45, 45 sec below my previous fastest. Felt very good, especially as I'm still a bit bunged up after a cold last week. Tomorrow I will do 16k, with some hills, aiming for under 1h25. If so I'm still on target for 1h50 at Hastings. Only three weeks to go now.

Only had half a bottle of wine and two beers this week - I am now planning on no booze at all for the next three weeks to see how it helps.

When I bought my asics I was advised to get 13's having worn 12's before, but they felt perfect from day 1. No more knee pain, back pain or scuffing shoes as I bring my feet through. The thing that tells me they are the perfect shoes (for me at least) is that after nearly two years of use the wear on the soles is absolutely even - every shoe I have ever had before has worn on the outer heel much faster than anywhere else. Mine are very nearly dead now but I daren't change them three weeks before a half marathon.

just done t-wells half. bugger me that hill at the 6.5 mark really took it out of me; my hamstrings done in. last 4 miles my legs were barely bending.
breathing wise thought i felt fine and had plenty left in for the sprint finish. was on for 1hr 56 at half way, waddled in in 2.07.
one hand disapopinted with the time, but on the other happy that it was a tough course and im sure the hill work will pay off come the london.

pretty sure i can do under 2hrs on a flat course for a half.

No problem, I didn't read it that way, and you were making a valid point.

I'm sure a lot of people buy the name brand thinking they will be better for your running health and endurance. I did try some Nike's on, and they were very odd.... they had a rounded edge on the inner side of the sole, and I could feel my foot "rolling" with it. Felt like the very thing I am trying to get away from.

I can look it up.... but what is "pronate"? I've seen/heard it talked about a few times now.

BTW.... congrats on the T.Wells run and good like in the London.

OK.... Pronate: rotation of the medial bones in the midtarsal region of the foot inward and downward so that in walking the foot tends to come down on its inner margin... WTF!

So I take it should be 47 minutes.

Still pretty good I would say.
