Is it behind the bone or in front? Also, did it get better once you've run for a while?

Managed to do a 2:01 training half marathon last night, previous best was 2:15 and I felt I could carry on last night which was pleasing with the Brighton Marathon in mind. Any suggestions as to when I should stop running before the marathon? The Tuesday before hand?

I tend to have a 3 week taper where my mileage decreases but I run pretty hard in the sessions I do. In marathon week I generally have a speed session on the Tuesday, then an easy run Weds and that's me done. This year I'm having injury problems so may be on a 5 week taper with almost zero running, doing some cycling instead and short runs to test my injury.

I don't stop running, I just reduce mileage. Some people feel they benefit more from complete rest for a couple of days where as others like myself like to keep the legs moving throughout.

I tend to do 3-4 miles on a Friday then a gentle parkrun on the Saturday or at the very least go for a half hour walk.

A long time since posting on this thread, have been running regularly, just feel like I've plateaued a bit in the last few years. My sub 3 hour marathon in Dublin in 2012 was a wonderful moment for me but I patted myself on the back a bit too much and didn't really push on. I did a couple of local races recently, just under 39 mins in a 10k where I went out too fast and then 85:44 in a Half Marathon where I executed my race plan well but still was over a minute off my PB. Maybe by posting on this thread I'll put pressure on myself to try and get a few PBs. They say a fast 5k is the base for getting longer distance PBs as well so a sub 18 5k is my ambitious target this year!

Based on your other times sub 18 5k shouldn't be an issue.

Good times will come down to consistent running, i.e. 5-6 times a week. More miles the better, without increasing mileage too much obviously.

First time on this thread. Ran the NYC half last weekend, my first half. In fact my first sign up run of any kind. Started training in January and I hadn't tried running much more than a mile since I was in school (I'm 40 now) and I can't say that my training was particularly intense. But completed it without walking in a very steady eddie time of around 2hr 45 mins. Overall a very enjoyable experience, and I think I'll keep the running going and sign up for the NYC half again next year.

Thanks. I think if I can get my act together I can do it. Just need to be more consistent. While I'm having a good spell at the moment I have far too many weeks in the year where I do very little running.

Great first one, keep it up steadily, and you'll smash that next year by some distance.

So got my Final Details pack for the London Marathon today, but couldn't work out which colour start I need to be at? Is this just me being a bit durrrrp or do you not find out until you pick up your pack from the Expo?

My number is in the 13k's and I got in via the ballot.

I'm in the same boat, it's been about five weeks and still twinges in the morning or when I move in an odd direction.

I'm not running as I've read it's best to leave it until you have a few days of not noticing any discomfort or it will not heal properly. I'm finding it very frustrating and am worried how hard (at my age) it will be to get my momentum back.

Any advice on recovery do's and don't would be appreciated.

Rest hasn't helped me at all. Had 2 weeks of no running post a chest cold and still niggled a bit during then, came back running and still playing about. Slipped off a stile on Sunday and hurt my knee so haven't run since then but still having problems. Probably an issue somewhere else causing it, I think I'll have to bite the bullet and see a physio.
